how to put protection on a router for my computer

brodkill

The government did it.
i just set up wi-fi on my computer so that i can have internet on my wii. i can not figure out how to put security on my wi-fi connection

i am using a d-link router

i was told by a friend that all i needed to do was put my ip address in my web browser search par and go from there, but that does not work for me

if anybody knows a really easy/simple way of puting security on a d-link roter, i'd love for you to help me

:)

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
The router should come with some sort of wizard (not the robed kind) on either the installation CD or on the web that you can use to setup your wireless network. I know with my NetGear router, I had to type a web address into my browser and use that to set up the network. I'm assuming that yours is similar.

type the following into the address bar of your web browseer:
192.168.1.1
or
192.168.2.1
not quite sure anymore which one it is for D-Link...

this will take you to your router's dashboard. the password from the factory is either 'admin' or simply blank (read the manual). once inside, you should see a menu that will have something like wifi settings or wifi security tabs. click on it, and you can enter a password for your connection (WEP or WPA). all computers that connect wirelessly will then have to use that same password to be connected to the internet.
WPA is better than WEP, by the way.
if you have any more questions, or need a detailed guide, let me know which exact model you have, or simply use google.
