Some ants are cannibals. The cannibals raid the nests of other ants and feed on the ant larvae. Ordinary ants are not cannibals. When they detect a dead ant (by the chemicals dead ants emit), they will carry the dead ant to the trash heap area of the ant's nest and dump it over there. So, what you saw may be just that: ant workers carrying dead ants and dumping them into the trash heap.
