Not totally surprised by the fact that Bardwell is a Republican.
I grew up 30 minutes from this town(even worked/lived there a short period).
I agree with the newlywed wife in that I was only shocked at the blatant bigotry ,but his attitude isn't so shocking here.
That's why I am pessimistically convinced that the GOP will have a stranglehold on the South for years to come.
