"Imprisoned" by an Automatic Hallway Light ??

I gotta say this sort of thing doesn't do much to warm me up to religion, particularly the zealous, orthodox, or fundamentalist types. Assuming it's true, that is...

Excerpt:

A Jewish couple are suing their neighbours in a block of flats, saying an automatic security light is keeping them prisoner in their home because it forces them to break their Sabbath rules.

Dr Dena Coleman and husband Gordon claim they cannot leave their holiday flat on the Sabbath because when they do they automatically trigger the light in the communal hallway - contravening a religious ban on turning on electrical items from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday because it constitutes 'creating fire'.

I don't see the problem. Recent rulings have allowed Jews to use cell phones with voice recognition on the Sabbath. If they're not physically flipping a switch then they're not the ones turning on the light. Making fire, though? In terms of rhetoric I'd say that's a pretty creative argument to make someone do something you want done.

And you're right, it won't endear their beliefs to the community. It does seem petty.

...and let nobody accuse me of anti-semitism or whatever b.s. on this. I've yet to know much of ANY religion that doesn't have some variety of nonsense like this. I'm getting more and more frustrated by it.

What is it with so many people who are actually forcing OTHERS to bend to their religions then have the audacity to play victim, as though the whole world is out to suppress them (if they can't "teach" "intelligent design" or force everyone in their apt. bldg. to adapt to their superstitious crapola, etc., etc., etc.)...

You have to laugh, it's so stupid what else can you do. Where does this mentality come from that they feel that their religious practice should be imposed upon those living around them. Now whilst I'm not well read on the Jewish religion, I thought it was customary to not leave your home on the sabbath. Is there anyone out there who can put me right here or am I right, if I am they're breaking it anyway. But I may be wrong so I will not continue down this path.

But back to the story, I'm assuming the light was put into place to allow those who are on that floor of the building to see where they are going whilst they are there. Now, if they take that down because they are afraid of these people and someone trips and breaks an arm for example, will they be liable to sue these people who deliberately sought to remove such a device on the grounds of religious practice. I hope so.

Surely it's more important to ensure of the health and safty of all the tennants of that floor rather than just a few who should keep their religious practices in their home which is not even their full time home anyway it's their holiday home!

Ridiculous.

Nice, take the lights away, and I bet they sue, because they fell, and claim it was due to a poorly illuminated hallway. This has nothing to do with religion, that's their convenient excuse for not getting their way.

Yeah, I suppose you're right about that.

It is almost like it could be from an Orthodox Jewish version of "Seinfeld" or something...

"Jerry! Those lights are imprisoning us! It's very serious!!"

Where's Kramer when you need him? He always told it like it is [enter Micheal Richards racist joke here] ....

Yes, I bribed and cheated to get this far
If the hallway is owned by the landlord, then he can do whatever the fuck he wants to, it's his property.

Civil court is a joke and it should be disbanded. If you are not committing a criminal action, then you are within your rights to do whatever it is you are doing and there is no legal grounds for you to be punished for it.

I'm so great I'm jelous of myself.
There are degrees of orthodoxy, perhaps this couple is very orthodox indeed. The story is from the Daily Mail however and they tend to trawl these up from the most improbable sources.

I would be surprised if they cannot get some kind of dispensation from their Rabbi, but then again it's likely that their rabbi is very orthodox too.
