I think that Joshua would receive better consideration on the west coast, as those damn easterners are just too ruthless and headstrong when it comes to getting from point A to point B.
As for myself, yes, I believe that I'd stop for a moment and hand the monkey 2 or 3 bucks, sure, support the arts, that's cool... I prefer guitar though.
I'm going to be honest, if I'm on my way to work I stop for nobody. Of course, if I'm waiting for the train to arrive I would take the time to appreciate a good performance, that is, a performance that doesn't make my ears hurt as badly played violins usually do.
Subway station during rush hour? People ging to work with their cell phones and Ipads and the hustle and bustle? Of course hardly anyone is going to notice. Put him in a park on a sunny day and I'll be he draws a crowd.
As far as the social experiment about perceiving beauty...that's a bunch of crap. There are times to appreciate beauty and then there are times when we have other shit going on we need to focus on.
The beauty will always be there when we're in the right frame of mind.
I saw plenty of musicians and other undesirable when I was on vacation on DC. I wouldn't give any of them a second look regardless of how well they were playing. It might be Bach, and it might be a great performance, but I'm not going to be interested enough to stop in a metro station to listen to it. It has nothing to do with appreciating beauty. Classical music just isn't that entertaining to me. Pus, I have shit to do.
I'm a musician. If I go into a subway station at rush hour, I better have the right expectations. And if the expectation is that people are going to stop and watch for an hour, then give a thousand bucks just because he's excellent and plays an amazing instrument, then the people who expect that are fucking stupid.
I'll support the arts my whole life. If this guy was playing a multimillion dollar instrument in a subway station expecting people to notice, then he's the fucking idiot.
