Here we go again with the UN sanctions, just a different Middle easteren country. When will people learn that sanctions and UN inspectors do not work. We gave Saddam 17 sanctions from 3 April, 1991 resolution 687 till the US lead invasion.

IAEA inspectors to the second facality that could be used for weapons

Also just a FYI the missles that were pulled out of Poland and Czech Rep were on the same path that a ICBM would take from Terhran to NYC, interesting.

Whats the alternative to sanctions? I don't think we really want to be contemplating attacking them do we? As to Saddam and sanctions ,lets not forget he had no WMD's and that UN inspectors were withdrawn by the US over their objections (Hans Blix). We miscalcualted big time in Iraq, lets not repeat that and I don't think we will.

One of the things I heard Obama say and was really glad to hear it was that Iran must live up to the non proliferation theory and that countries who already have nukes must move towards disarmament and reductions in their nuclear arsenals. While we and the russians (the 2 major nuclear countries) were once on that kind of path we had gotten away from it and that was primarliy a US policy. We abandoned the ABM treaty and talked about things like missile defense systems in countries right next to Russia which was very provacative.

We only have the moral authority to talk about other people and nukes when we acknowledge that any country having them including the US is not desirable.

Also just in case you didn't know Iran has no long range ICBM's and is not expected to have any in the forseable future.ICBM's is a tougher thing to build then even nukes themselves.Nukes would be as usefull to Iran if they had them as they are to all the other countries that have them.Only good to deter attacks, but virtually unusable otherwise.Hundreds of billions for weapons you can't use unless you want to be wiped out along with probably most of mankind.Time(it's past time even) to realize they must be gotten rid off by all before someone decides it's worth that risk and we annihilate ourselves.

I got worried watching Obama, Brown and others on CNN just now...cue Invasion, and IQ Mark II. Surely not??? and :concerned:

As was already somewhat mentioned, I don't think Iran has ICBM's and even if they did I think Russia is the only country with ICBM's even capable of ranges like that (7000+ miles), this is kinda like Japan saying N Korea is pointing missiles at the US. I can stand outside my house and point at my state capitol building, doesn't mean I can throw a baseball that far.

I have no idea what alternatives there are, and I applaud Obama for taking a stand on Iran, McCain would just bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb bomb Iran :D. I know Iran does not have ICBM capability, but they might be able to land a missle in a major european city at the very least Israel. Guess we will have to wait till Oct 1 to see what Russia has to say

Side bar, Israel is thinking about air strikes, which would more then likely fire up Hezzbulla and Hamas

You can't have everything! Where would you put it?!
Not a commentary. Entertainment purposes only. I quote.

It is said that during the 1973 Yom Kippur War—known on the other side as the Ramadan War—an Israeli military spokesman was asked for the fourth or fifth time whether the Jewish state would use nuclear weapons if its ground forces continued to suffer defeat. He repeated the official mantra—"Israel will not be the first country to deploy nuclear weapons in this region"—and then stepped back from the microphone (which he believed to have been switched off) and whispered to himself, "And we won't be the second one, either."

And the 2003 article it came from if any are interested.

It is by the brilliant Christopher Hitchens.

Sanctions against Iraq after the first Gulf War absolutely did work. Because of the sanctions, Iraq had serious economic ramifications therefore Saddam was unable to afford to develop nuclear weapons, continue his WMD programs and his military was in shambles by 2002 compared to the start of the first Gulf War.

Here's my idea of a sanction. Just a nice little warning for them ^_^

I concur that sanctions do indeed - when carried out - work. But it's the fucking human cost and misery...more innocents lost. :nono:

In light of all the trillions that the Wars in Iraq and Afghan will end up costing the American Tax Payer....I think sanctions actually DID work against Iraq.

I have no problem with sanctions against Iran.

I would like to see us lift economic sanctions against Cuba. 50 years is long enough. We need to "let go" of the Bay of Pigs....
