I hope everyone fared well over the weekend through hurricane Irene. I lost my power for about 20 hours and got close to no sleep at all watching the trees sway back and forth in front of my house. My mom on the other hand wasn't so lucky. Her basement flooded yet again, this time much worse. Her sub-pump that pumps the water away from the house shut off after she lost power and she had about a foot of water in her entire basement.I spent all night helping her sweep out the water to the pump after the power came back on. The pics below after from after the clean up : \

It was very sad and disappointing to see, but after watching the news, we are both thankful it wasn't as bad as some other people who lost their homes or worse :(

I wish you all luck in cleaning up after this mess and hope power is restored quickly to those who still dont have it.

Would you hit it?
Sorry to hear about your mom's basement. Does she know that they sell battery-backup sump pumps that turn on when the power goes out? They cost about $200-$300 and run for 6-8 hours off a single battery (you can buy spare batteries to add more time). If this is becoming a recurring problem, it might be a good investment.

i had no idea! i thought she should get a generator or just sell the house, its caused way too many problems already...

thanks so much for the info though, ill pass it along ;)

A generator would do the job too and probably only cost a little more. But then you have to deal with fuel and exhaust and making sure to turn it on when the power goes out (problematic if she's not home when the power goes out). It's more versatile, but probably less effective for what she needs.
