"In the scam, callers posing as IRS representatives advise potential victims that two certified letters were sent to the taxpayer in the mail but were returned as undeliverable. The callers then threaten to arrest the potential victim if a payment is not immediately made through a prepaid debit card. The scammer also tells the victim that the purchase of the card is linked to the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) system: it is not.

To ensure that the potential victim doesn't back out, the caller warns the taxpayer not to contact their tax preparer, an attorney or their local IRS office until after the tax payment is made. This should be a red flag."

It's crazy what scams can be successfully pulled on people.

Here it is still the "Grandchild Trick" that is doing much harm over the years. The bad part is, the old folks targeted in many cases are way too traumatized to tell the police and afraid that their real family will put them in the feared retiorement homes.

The trick goes like this:

In most cases, a young woman calls telephone number after telephone number, in search of old people answerong. When an old lady or old gentleman answer, they begin the conversation with a tearful voice, like they were desperately tryiong to tell their favorite granny or grampa about the desperate situation they are in. The old people often ask, if the caller is ther grandchild "christine" or "Susie" or wjhatever. There the scammer have a name to work on. They tell they are (as an example) losing their home or such, need 19.000 Euros or such a sum. The old folks say, "Oh, let me help you, I can't let you get homeless!". They get the money from the bank, the caller tells them their "fiancee" will pick up the money, the rest is silence. After the money changes hands, there are no more cals and the old lady or the old man find out that they got plundered.
