I don't have a high speed internet connection? Do you need one to own and use a PS3 (or and Xbox360)? I really don't care about playing online but do I need the connection to download updates or patches or anything?

no, not really. you can play all games (except for the ones that are explicitly online-only) in offline.

as far as firmware updates for the machine itself are concerned you can simply download them to your PC and then transfer them over to the PS3 using a USB stick. that is what i do because while i have cable internet my PS3 connects to it through the wireless and i don't want it to lose the signal while it's updating.

sony have a little guide for this:

games seem to need online updates, but i'm not sure about that. i do know that you can download gamesaves (from other players) to a USB stick and then transfer them the PS3; patches might work that way as well, but i have not tried this myself.
