Is American losing its roots?

laxe

I ran out of lube. Can I borrow yours?
I mean America was founded on working hard, and never backing down. Standing up for yourself and being rebelious.

Now it seems like those things get you tickets or arrested or maced.
Hell even freedon of speech is starting to get people in trouble.
Now the government gives 2 shits about what people have to say.

I dont Im just getting pissed off about it and IMO the state the country is in right has more to do with the government and authority screwing over citizens more so than them fucking up our money.

America was founded on hard work because it was literally built from the ground up. It wasn't a decision or propagandized ideal that we started with; it was the reality of the times.

People rebel when they're pissed off, and there is always someone waiting to arrest or otherwise suppress rebellion. It's the way of things, and sometimes rebellion works, more often it doesn't.

The government only "cares" about what people have to say when what they're saying is a threat to the government itself. It's pretty much been this way from the beginning. Speech has never been free, it probably never can be. There are simply things you aren't going to be able to say and get away with. It's a strange concept, freedom of speech. It's very idealistic and somewhat impractical, although it does sound nice, which is what it was meant to do essentially.

The state of the US government is in the shape it's in because it has been this way for a long, LONG, time. The state of a capitalistic economy is that of ups and downs, and the periodic crash has been noted since the conception of capitalism. We've been long overdue for a serious crash, and now that it's happened we start pointing fingers and realizing the government is corrupt as hell. That's nothing new. It's just a nice scapegoat to avoid the numerous problems facing the country. Economically we're in trouble not because of government but because the people have turned the economy into a credit based downward spiral of debt. This is partly due to government, high taxes on buisnesses etc, but the people have a large responsibility for this particular government, given the setup of the US and the power the majority can hold.

It's our money and work; if we put it into the hands of idiots IT'S OUR FAULT; If we want to be ruled by commercialism, IT'S OUR FAULT. WE are the majority; WE vote people into office.

So, the state of the US is more the fault of an ignorant and lazy majority. At the most basic level, if people just took a little more interest in general government and local government, we'd see huge improvements, but that's probably not going to happen. If you want less corruption and good leaders, then you have to pay attention to government. We can't wait till disaster strikes to finally start looking at the government for what it's current status is.

In short, we're screwed, and I'm in debt up to my eye balls because of the stimulus package. It'll be an interesting next couple of years, to say the least.

I Just felt like ranting today I guess :glugglug:.

I don't feel like I explained my position as well as I could have, and I can't edit it :(

But, to answer your question, yes, it is. America's roots are based in the government. Idealism is all nice and dandy, but the basic "roots" of the United States are founded in a overarching republic government and a very potent local government. Since we don't care about either, we're definitely off track. The ideals this country was founded on are pretty words, which people will fight for. The strength of the country lies in it's governmental backbone. The people and ethics of the U.S have changed dramatically overtime, as have the circumstances of each period in time.

The idea that people, or the government itself, don't have the fundamental American attitude or ideals is absurd, as it is mostly a nostalgic undertone. It is very much like religion in that respect. The ideals of America will change over time, as will its people. They have never been a set of morals, codes, or beliefs. America is too diverse for something like that to work and has been since its conception.

Only the most generic and vague of beliefs are core for American values anyways, such as "freedom," so there really isn't much to argue for on that front. You can't lose those because they can be interpreted a number of ways.

In short, America's roots and beliefs are a sham and very generic. The real value is in the government itself.

I think we are losing our way... go back and read the Constitution and you will see just how far we have come. America was supposed to be a place where you could make your way and have freedom to live your life without government intrusion, hence why the first Europeans left Europe to come here. Now, people seem to want a false sense of security more than they value the freedom our forefathers died for.

I suppose it's a natural cycle, and Plato was right. :)

This freedom was though more theoretical than real.As it's government which underwrites your freedom there's no way you can live your life without some intrusion from it.
Wild animals don't have government so neither do they have rights.Do rabbits get protection from foxes ?

Yes, we American's are losing our roots. Why can't we just go back to the good ole days when White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant, land-holding, males of privileged birth (1/2 of which were slave holders) controlled everything?

Yes, we are losing our roots. Principles of limited government, low taxes, checks on mobocracy, limited presidential power, are all being thrown out the window.

We have the right to bear Arms, so...:D

For now, but they're trying hard to figure out a way to disarm us. Hell, there's a new law coming through outlawing certain pocket knives that have a spring assist. Not switch blades, just your typical pocket knife. Homeland security has been told to look out for people that support certain politicians, and the Constitution, I can't see how that's much different then Bush saying your with us, or against us". The 1st Amendment has been eroded to nothing, between the ACLU crying every time someone gets their feelings hurt, and the Government calling you a "homegrown terrorist" because you question them, and the Patriot act ass raping the rest of the Amendments, you wait, it'll get worse, they just haven't got around to exploiting all of the loop holes.

I'm so great I'm jelous of myself.
All societies are in a continual state of decline according to certain portions of society. If there's any deviation from a perceived ideal (which generally benefits from nostalgia and/or rose tinted spectacles) then it's considered a decline.

Other people call it progress. Is an 18th century government appropriate for a 21st century society even if it's an excellent (the best) 18th century government ?

Nice try. But there is not one single Bill in the House or the Senate about knives. Would be too much to ask you to cite your source on any fact you just claimed?

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
No, we're not losing our way. We're regaining our way and making ourselves RELEVANT for the 21st Century and beyond.

What seems different today, from the past, is that the GOP/Republicans have become the biggist, loudest, crybaby losers in the history of American politics.

This link explains this new GOP "dream" of separatism resulting from their infantile, crybabyness...

The GOP STILL can't believe they were destroyed in the elections and are considered a laughingstock party filled with racists and out-of-date ideas/solutions...
