Is lying about historical events criminal?

I'm so great I'm jelous of myself.
by the way, by republican democracy i mean democratic republic...not a party reference, as to the thread, i like when people lie, because it lets me know who they are, and everyone lies sometimes, when people lie about historical events it lets you know how they see the world, how they like to pretend the world is

What if the mythic lie inspires good deeds or patriotism that keeps us from anarchy or despotism?

True. But one has to ask how often that is the case. And even if it is for the "right cause", that suggests that the end justifies the means. Right? :dunno:

Even though it only took place a couple of years ago, look at how many people foolishly believe that the financial crisis was (primarily) caused by banks being "forced" to give loans to undeserving deadbeats by the government. Ignorant, simple minded people will believe whatever is most convenient... whatever supports their existing beliefs and doesn't require them to do any homework on their own.

When W. Bush attacked Iraq, I sat in a room full of very educated people and I was amazed at how many of them repeated the mantra, "we're better off fighting them over there than over here." Like Pavlov's dogs, they reacted to the stimulus of a (nonexistent) terrorist threat. It was an international gathering and it took me a couple of weeks to convince the Canadians and Mexicans that I wasn't one of the goobers. I don't see them anymore. But I wonder how many of them would be willing to admit that they were made fools of by W. Bush and the nation building neocons?

IMO, a lie is a lie.

I haven't met anyone that thought the banks were "forced" to give deadbeats loans but rather did it willingly hoping for huge profits.

Also everyone can get caught up in patriotic flair of "fighting them over there rather than over here". After all they hit the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon and another plane that crash landed because the passengers knew something was up.

I take it as more of a "Glad they're over there fighting our trained soldiers as opposed to blowing up our buildings" stance.

I've written enough on various message boards, disputing this "theory" and explaining how the mortgage process works, that I could probably form those posts into a book by now. One person here (whose name I won't mention... to protect the guilty) even said that Barney Frank was the primary cause, because he allowed "those people" to go down to FNMA offices and get money. 2011 marks my 25th year in banking/real estate related activities. And I had NO idea that you could do anything other than maybe have your parking validated in a FNMA/FHLMC office. Neither FNMA nor FHLMC makes loans to consumers. But that's what this fellow claimed, so it must be true. :D

Word of warning: the dumbassity level is quite high on FreeOnes sometimes. Don't ask me why. Could have something to do with the lunar cycle... still working on a theory for that one.

I don't mean Afghanistan. I mean Iraq. Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11. Yet... 45 percent of Americans believe Mr. Hussein was "personally involved" in Sept. 11. It was a lie propagated by rubes and accepted by rubes. And a lot of decent young Americans have died for this make believe cause... the cost of which is now around a trillion dollars. Good thing we're in such good fiscal shape, otherwise it would be nice to have that money back. ;)
