Is lying ever right?

I judge right and wrong by the effect it has on others.I don't think lying in itself is wrong , it only becomes so if the motives are wrong.Sometimes telling the truth is hurtful ; if not necessary I don't do it.
I lie to my mother all the time.She is in a nursing home and has lost most of her reasoning , she's in a world of her own.Do I tell her she's stuck in bed for the rest of her life, has to be turned over every 2 hours and has to be fed with a spoon?No , I go along with her imagination and say things which make her feel better.

Well you have to weigh the consequences of being caught in the lie. Then you have to plan your back up lie. Always think of the chain and where the weak link that unveils the truth is.

No. One lie leads to another. Plus, if you have a conscience, you have that to deal with. How can someone trust you when you have lied to them.

Instead of lying, as regards the "Do I look fat?" question, I think it would be better, instead, to simply answer without answering.

Since what she is really asking you is, "Do you think I look good?", all that is needed is a response that answrs that question to her satisfaction.

Simply saying "Yes" or "No" is not the response she is really looking for.

And even though it's a roundabout way of going about things, it doesn't require you to lie . . . or even to lie by omission.
