if you attack a black guy because he's an asshole, it's assault. if you attack him simply because of his skin colour, it's a hatecrime.

so then by extension every rape is a hatecrime because the victim is attacked because of her gender.

then again, as silvia plath once said (or wrote), "every crime is committed to fill a void."

this is true, i think; but the term hatecrime seems to put more emphasis on the victim than the attacker. the rapist rapes because of some urge (self-esteem issues, his mom beat him too much, wtv), whereas the victim has no part in deciding this at all.

so instead of saying the victim was black or a woman, should we not rather say the attacker was a racist or a sexist? and why is rape called a sexcrime? sex and rape are not related.

i'm sory for not making sense, i'm coming off a brutal 12-hour shift at work. food now, more ramblings later.

Yes that is what I meant. We already have laws for all of this I never have seen the point of hate crime laws.

My thing is why did we need another law for that? There were already laws that covered all of that. The more laws you get the more convoluted the system becomes.

That is probably the reason right there, rapists get off on that control, and the power to strip someone of their dignity.

indeed. it's like the death penalty, its opponents say it doesn't prevent anyone from committing a crime, but if you fry the guy well then you have pretty much prevented him from doing it again, no?

That assumes that all rapes are male vs. female and the only people raped or sexually assaulted are female. Did the woman who raped and murdered that little girl in California hate little girls? What about homosexual rape? What about adult females who assault minor males? :dunno:

If someone can't be found guilty of an assault (whatever type it is), then I don't see how they can be found guilty of a hate crime. And if they can be found guilty of an assault, then I've never quite understood how or why their (hate filled) state of mind makes a difference. So I agree with Slasher that these types of additional laws just convolute the system.
