I think he's protecting himself. As more of the bullshit comes out at Ohio State, he would have been subject to more and more sanctions. He knew damned well that he was not going to have a national title level team for years to come. As it is, he'll take a year off, they'll pay out his contract, he'll still be filthy rich, and some top tier team will scoop him for the next season. Possibly a Florida team?

Tressel put in trouble because in december, he sign off on something that said he knew nothing about the petty crime. then ncaa found out he knew. that is what got him in trouble. i hope he catches up with a nfl team because he has proven himself at a brand name school like ohio state.

i have 2 things to say about this in general.
Firstly: the NCAA rules are stupid, they are designed so they and university presidents could get rich at the expense of the athletes. They always claim go care about the 'Student-Athlete' in reality they dont give a wink about the Student part of that as long as theyre making money, theyll ignore the fact Derek Rose never actually took his SAT until hes in the NBA
Secondly: all things considered from the first part, the rules are the rules, ridiculous and self serving as they are. The penalties are severe, the NCAA loves to make an example of everyone who isnt bringing money to their greedy pockets. He didn't "resign" so much as he was sure to be fired and out of respect/PR they offered to let him resign, should he have the foresight to accept it and not try and stay.
These are pretty much my feelings on the situation. As a UofM fan though I'm glad to see him go. But it's a shitty way to go for sure.
The rules suck and I'd actually think a ton of school break them. Seems OSU just got carried away and it's coming back to haunt them. If you don't like the rules work on getting them changed. If you break them then accept the consequences of getting caught. Just sucks for future teams at OSU as kids and staff who never were involved will now foot the bill for what happened.
