John Smoltz and Last Night's Game....

I have to say that it was hard to watch John Smoltz last night in his latest start. It doesnt seem like he has anything left. I understand that no one thought he was going to dominate like old, but perhaps could find a Jaime Moyer type resurgance. How much of this can we attribute to that Wind Tunnel/Launching Pad that the Yanks built? Homers were flying all over the place from both teams....

I didn't see the game but I fear Smoltz has nothing left and I really wish we would have got a starting pitcher by the trade deadline. At least we got Martinez 'cause Varitek just can't hit anymore either.

Varitek I think has more value than Smoltz. Varitek has a great ability to handle the rotation and is a good leader. He is producing, although at a lower level than his average. Smoltz provides great leadership and tuttelage as well, but so far, his outings have not justified his presence. I hate that I have to say that about one of my favorite hurlers of all time.

Fact: African American men have bigger penises!
Smoltz would be good out of the bullpen to face right handed hitters only. He can still get righties out but lefties are lighting him up.

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
I think the Red Sox were too infatuated with the possibility of getting Roy Halladay that they failed to address their needs, and they don't have enough offense or pitching to hold off Tampa for the Wild Card.

Brad Penny = Bust
John Smoltz = Time to retire
Dice K = not a factor this season
Tim Wakefield = may be done for the season

--Had a gaping hole at SS since Nomar left. Should not have let Orlando Cabrera go. Should not have signed Lugo, obviously. The other guy they had from St Louis--Eduardo something?--was a legit All Star but turned out to be a bust.

--Varitek is not a factor at the plate anymore. Youkilis and Pedroia are quality "slap and tickle" hitters but are not "Big Boppers" in the Manny/Papi mold.

--The Red Sox needed to trade Bucholtz for some goddamn MEAT in the middle of the lineup and they needed to cut Papi at the All-Star break. Papi is a creature of Roids and now that he's off them, he can't do shit....

The Red Sox fell asleep at the wheel and the wheels feel off the car basically....

Moyer has a talent that Smoltz never did and never will have....he throws left-handed. If he was a righty, he would have retired 10 years ago.

Sad when athletes overstay their abilities. Smoltz was a great pitcher.

Should not have signed Lugo, obviously. The other guy they had from St Louis--Eduardo something?--was a legit All Star but turned out to be a bust.

That was Edgar Renteria you are referring to, t-rock. He's been less than stellar ever since he signed that big contract with Boston and has bounced around a bit. He's is in SF now.

Lugo is doing a good job for the Cardinals right now by the way.

Just got designated for assignment by the Red Sox this afternoon.
Looks like its a wrap for John!

...and they don't have enough offense or pitching to hold off Tampa for the Wild Card.
Really? That's your comment on that? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...you're funny, but obviously not serious. Not enough offense or pitching? Yeah, right...again, you cannot be taken seriously.

Anyhow, Smoltz himself should call it a career, before it gets even more embarrassing, and that point might have passed by already.

Everything else is OK. I don't see them winning the East, because the Skankees really got it goin and sometimes money really wins, this year that will be the case. Penny still can win some games, Beckett and Lester are aces enough to carry the club to the end. And even Buchholz seems to be solid enough this season to win games.

If they really lose out on the wild card it will be the Rangers, the Ray are way too obsolete. But all in all the Red Sox will make it. It won't be neither pretty nor easy, but they will grind it out.

I laid out the case. The Red Sox would be able to "hang on" if they had Dice K or Tim Wakefield. They don't now and by the time they come back, Tampa will have passed them by.

Roy Halladay was too expensive for the Red Sox to trade for. They could've/should've looked at Cliff Lee and a Big Bopper. Arizona has a couple of Boppers and they (the team) are doing nothing this year.

I guess you think Paul Byrd can win 7 games between now and Sept? I don't.

If you wish to live wisely, ignore sayings including this one.

With the way he was treated in Boston, there was absolutely zero chance of Cabrera resigning with them. He's still bitter about it from the interviews I've read, and that's saying something, as he's typically a really nice guy.

How old is Smoltz? He's got to be ancient by now.

I think I heard on SC that he's 42... not ancient, but certainly past his prime.

It's painful to watch the guys stink it up... he's a great pitcher who's a shoe-in for 1st ballot HOF. I always like his style, he plays baseball like it should be played - hard nosed.

Hmmmm....on second thought, maybe this is why he didn't do so well as a Red Sock.....

http://www.nesn.com/2009/08/cardinals-say-smoltz-was-tipping-pitches-in-boston.html

Judging by how he pitched yesterday for the Cardinals (5 shutout innings, 9 strikeouts), I'd say they just might be onto something. If Smoltz can approximate his prior form, the Cardinals now have the best starting staff in baseball.

Are the coaches in Boston asleep at the wheel?

This was also against the second worse offense in baseball O think they bat something like a .223 as a team??? I thought the same thing till I heard their team stats.
