it was the fucking Padres. Double A for some franchises. Look at American League pitchers going over to the National League...Lee was good in Cleveland. he is unhittable in Philly

Well they have found a way to win 52 times this year so they must be able to hit somebody on occasion. I'll grant you the benefit of the doubt, however. Let's say it was a fluke against San Diego. We'll see how he does in his next start against the....uh, oh....Nationals. I guess that game won't count either. Oh well, maybe sometime Smoltz will pitch against a real team and we'll find out for sure. Until then....a win is a win as far as I am concerned. He would certainly seem to be an upgrade over Todd Wellemeyer so far.

In seven starts against the American League, Smoltz allowed less than five earned runs twice and got out of the fifth inning three times. In his last four starts in the AL he allowed 8 homers.

I thought his ideal spot would be as a seventh or eighth inning guy. He could get through the order once, but after that, AL hitters had him dialed in.

For Smoltz, he couldn't be in a better place. La Russa and Duncan get more out of their pitchers than anyone. heck, sometimes I wonder how much of a genius La Russa would be if Duncan weren't standing right next to him.

Rarely do baseball teams not win 60 and lose 60, it is the other 42 games that determine the season.

That may be but I also think there may be some credence to the article that I referenced. If true, that would certainly go a long way toward explaining why the AL hitters had him "dialed in" when he pitched for the Bosox.

100% correct and Tony will be the first one to tell you that.

I don't disagree but it doesn't mean that they have zero talent either. I guarantee that if you fielded a whole team of guys with the baseball talent most of us have, we wouldn't win any games in the majors.

We'll see how he pitches the rest of the year. I think Tony will use him as a 4th starter now that Lohse is on the DL. The plan is to get 5 strong innings from him and then turn it over to the pen just like they did last Sunday. So far, I am encouraged with the results.

Smoltz went 6 innings last night, struck out 6 and gave up one run. His ERA since joining the Redbirds is .82 with 11 innings pitched. Of course, he was pitching against Washington so I suppose it doesn't really count.

I'll be very interested to see what he does in his next start....against Milwaukee next week perhaps.

This is real frustrating as a Red Sox fan...

I am not shocked. Look at what Cliff Lee is doing with the Phillies. It's not a knock on Smoltz, but top to bottom, American League lineups are simply better. Smoltz was good the first time through the line-up in the American League.

Jagger, I know you aren't trying to compare the nationals and padres to the teams in the AL east as far as offensive firepower is concerned. The Red Sox needed Smoltz to get guys out in the AL East. He proved he couldn't do it. When your era is over 8 and you haven't pitched out of the 6th inning, it's either AAA or release.

No....I'm not. I am trying to make a point that Smoltz was indeed tipping his pitches in Boston, their coaching staff didn't catch on, the Cardinals staff did, they picked him up, changed his mechanics and now he is pitching very well. This is not an argument about which league or division is better.....it's about whether or not Smoltz was tipping his pitches. Looks to me like he was.

He'll go up against the Brewers lineup this week. We'll see how he does against them. If the guy proves he can still win ballgames, he would be a welcome addition to any staff, NL or AL.

Duncan and LaRussa are the best manager/PC combo in baseball. I am not thrilled about John Farrell, but he is the Sox guy.

I don't know if it was tipping pitches or just missing location. Smoltz got hit hard cuz his stuff was up and center. He doesn't throw hard enough to get away with it for too long.
