He was arrested and in the UK after the rape allegations were made. Swedish prosecutors first accused Assange of sex crimes, leaked to the media, then dropped the charges. Then a new prosecutor was assigned and she reinstated them, appealed and had interpol issue an arrest warrent. The only reason he was held so long was because the Swedish caused so many delays.

??? Being accused of being a sex offender is totally different to being convicted as a sex offender. Its not about people thinking he is 'perfectly alright', no one knows anything until he goes to court and is either convicted or cleared.

Assange has not been tried or proven guilty, yet the charges that were filed are flimsy and seem suspicious even to his detractors. And, for the record, he is accused of crimes that wouldn't even be considered criminal acts in America.

What I don't get, however, is all the "pro-America" Americans who want Assange (an Australian) tried under the strictest US laws, but without the US justice standards applied to it. Would we make an effort to detain and extradite a Canadian who published intel. that was leaked from a Cuban officer who wanted to reveal Castro's criminal behavior to the world? Does anybody think that we would do that?

Being "innocent until proven guilty" schtick flies in court, but it doesn't do shit in real life. If I was accused of rape, got out on bail and was walking down the street, it doesn't matter if I am guilty or not, people are going to be looking at me as if I were a criminal and would be crossing the street to avoid me. However, Mr. Assange did the world a huge "favour", so even if he is guilty, hell, it doesn't matter! There is no way he could be guilty, it must just be a ruse by the US government. There is no way in hell he could be a sex offender, he's a hero! It would be different if people actually said "I don't know if he is guilty, we'll let the courts decide." No, because he is a "hero" he obviously is innocent and should be released so every girl in university who is anti-establishment can line up to hop on his dick.

This whole thing is just an attempt to get him extradicted to Sweden. There will already be an agreement for Sweden to hand him over to the US (The US has bullied Sweden before) so the Swedes will lock him up long enough for the US to get together some espionage charges. The sex charges will be dropped and he'll be packed off to Guantanimo Bay. He'll be ok I think if he remains in the UK (unless the US bullies us to) as we have a strict justice system as well as Assange having many high profile supporters along with most of the British public who are sick over the wars Bush and Blair dragged us into.
