Two starving young girls were found desperate for food and water after allegedly being forced to live in a tent outside their parents’ mobile home.

The girls, aged just three and four, were found wandering alone in the woods near the tent in Union County, Florida, in a scene that police described as ‘terrible’.

Their parents Mark, 25, and Kathy Tucker, 26, admitted they had left the children to fend for themselves but claimed they were protected by the family dog, police said.

‘It was just a terrible sight, terrible scene,’ Lieutenant Lyn Williams, of the Union County Sheriff's Office, told WJXT 4 News in Jacksonville.

‘There was no food (and) no water. That was the first thing the children asked for.’

The parents were in Gainesville getting drug treatment at a methadone clinic - and a family friend allegedly became concerned after they left home without their children.

The couple were going to try to sell their blood plasma at a donation centre instead of returning home, reported the Gainsville Sun.

The friend went back, found the tent with sheets and two beds inside and called 911, police said. The two girls were found wandering around wearing their pyjamas.

One had lost a shoe, reported WJXT 4. The two girls were dirty, hungry and thirsty - but otherwise unharmed, police said.

The couple also have a third daughter, a five-year-old, but she was at school.

The children’s grandmother was found in the home but police said she was not capable of caring for the girls and may not have even known who they were.

The tent was outside a mobile home that appeared to be undergoing repairs, but it did have electricity and running water.

The Tucker couple were arrested and were in jail on charges of child neglect on Thursday. All three children have been placed in a relative’s custody.

i slept in a tent at my moms house for a couple weeks.

it was fun. but i actually wanted to.

Yea, when we were kiddos we used to turn our outdoor chaise lounge chairs on their sides and create a ''fort-like configuration'' on the backyard lawn, yep, we'd drape beach towels over the top and sleep in mummy bags, but only after begging my parents to be able to do so.

I would let myself starve and go through any hardships myself before I let something happen to my children. Whatever was the best of what I had left they would get it even if I had to go without, and if that wasn't enough I would do what it reasonably took within what's right to get them what they need even even if that means losing them.

It doesn't take too long reading this story to know these aren't the kind of people that are responsible or should be taking care of anybody. I feel bad for everybody involved especially the children.
