GOPers want it killed because if properly investigated it would not reflect well on the previous administration. Some Demos want it to go away (primarily in the administration) because they don't want all of their political currency tied up in a large scale investigation that will undoubtedly become political. Leon Panetta knows the truth and doesn't want to embarrass the agency he now leads. All of that added up means the story unfortunately went buh-bye.
