Police: Officer killed in crash drove 109 mph with no lights, sirens
Sheriff calls speed in early morning on Flamingo Road ‘excessive and unsafe’

Metro Police Officer James Manor, who was killed earlier this month while responding to a 911 call, was speeding and had no emergency lights or siren on at the time of the crash, police said Wednesday.

Sheriff Doug Gillespie said Manor was traveling east on Flamingo Road at 109 mph just before the collision, which occurred at 1:49 a.m. on May 7.

At the time of the crash, the officer’s car was clocked at 90 mph, Gillespie said. Manor wasn't wearing a seat belt.

The sheriff said officers must obey traffic laws if responding to calls without using their vehicle's emergency lights and siren. The speed limit along the stretch of Flamingo where the crash occurred is 45 mph.

“Officer Manor’s speed was excessive and unsafe,” Gillespie said.

The sheriff said he learned of the officer's speed, gathered from laboratory tests, late Friday night.

“Even with lights and sirens, that speed was excessive," Gillespie said.

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
Doing >2x the speed limit, without lights and siren. I guess it's all part of protecting and serving.

It's tempting to give you an instant example of my "name-calling", but I'll wait for someone important enough.
Suffice it to say, I can safely assume that you don't have the slightest experience in protecting anyone or anything worth having; as for serving I can see where you may have some experience there...("Would you like some ketchup with your fries, sir?")

Indeed...

Wow thats an interesting contrast. In that post the cop is just a great cop killed doing his duty, but in this newer story it comes out he was speeding with no lights and sirens. And the story is the other cops involved lied about the lights and siren being on and only an internal investigation (which the police are to be commended for performing) revealed that. And as the chief said even if he had lights and sirens on his speed was excessive.Sounds like he should have stayed as a teacher or whatever it was said he was previous to joining the force or at least had not enough training.Over a hundred mph to domestic dispute call?
This story hits home for me as when I was a kid my mother almost had a head on with me and my brother in the car with a rookie cop as she was making a left at a green light and the cop was coming up her lane (with no lights and siren on) getting ready to fly through the red light.Luckily he had time to lock them up and avoid hitting us.

He got killed when his vehicle colided with an another vehicle. What if he had killed the other guy as well? What if there had been a whole family in the other vehicle? What if one of the vehicles after collision had killed some pedestrian who just happened to pass by?

I understand that the officer had good intentions in his mind; i also don't think he should have driven slowly answering to a 911 call. But at least he could have put the flashing light on.

His actions are understandable, but not fully justifiable IMO.

What's the law on that in the US? Here where I'm from, police and other emergency vehicles MUST obey traffic lights regardless of the emergency; when they encounter a red light they must stop and can pass only if someone who has a green light lets them pass. Simply flying through the crossing without regarding traffic lights could easily cause a very severe accident.

Not sure on what the laws are specifically.probably vary state to state. My incident was many years ago (about 1965),sure some things are different then they were then here. But I am sure there is no law they must come to a complete stop at a red light ,at least not here in NJ and would bet not many other places in US.The police/ambulance/fire will slow and at least try to make sure its safe though these days here.
We have had lots of controversy here in the states with police involved in high speed chases which have resulted in death and injury to innocent motorists and pedestrians. Many places have made policys of police will not get involved in high speed chases for that reason.

And lets me just say to I was not saying the cop should have driven slowly to the call. But for sure 90 to 109 mph was not appropriate and if he was going to exceed the speed limit, definately lights and siren should have been on.The cop was way out of line and was putting the public at far too great a risk.I'm am not saying he intentionally did that but thats what he did.

Here, all code 3 (siren & beacon on) emergency vehicles must come to a complete stop before proceeding through an intersection of any type.

Ambulances and fire apparatus seem to obey this common sense law like clockwork, but law enforcement officers in cars don't always make a complete stop. You see, I'm an astute observer that way, I've caught em in the act on several occasions :nono: bad cop ! = no donut !!!!

Isn't it interesting how, when the lawman gets himself into hot water, the department officials immediately yank their ass off of the scene ?

"Hey, where'd that guy go ? he was just here 2 minutes ago !!! :wtf:

You try leaving the scene of a crime to preserve your "general interests" sometime ! Maybe pull off a "Michael Waltrip" - after you get drunk and roll your car, climb out of your vehicle (resting upside down) only to luckily flag down some single twenty something BABE who happened to be driving behind you all by herself at 1:30 AM.
"Sure she says. "Are you alright ? Hey you wouldn't happen to be Michael Wal . . . you are ! you are Michael racer dude !! Can I suck yer ? You can take a shower-n-kleen up at my place."

So you fuck her brains out only to wonder, some 16 hours later after finally pullin your petr from her pipe, just where your car is and what the fuck are these 30 messages in your cell ph mailbox ? :jester: All good stuff as long as you have the clout to get away with it.

It was for a domestic disturbance, Chef. While I never met officer Manor I have met several people close to him with the LVMPD and that community has been devastated by his loss. Yes, he showed a lack of judgment when he didn't hit the lights and siren but the other driver didn't yield to oncoming traffic and though he wasn't charged with DUI, he did have a BAC that would impair his reflexes.

I was at a farmers' market in NW Vegas Saturday and I was talking with a woman whose husband heads one of the bureaus within the dept. ( I want to say the employee assistance program, but I'm unsure.) Anyway, her husband and she were at the memorial service, which was broadcast locally, and there was a little finger pointing going on already.

It is my hope that this series of events will not tarnish the memory of someone who was so obviously loved by his community.

Here they can go through the red light. We are supposed to move to the left side of the road and let them pass. They usually have on lights and sirens so you can hear them coming.
