Left Computer On

howie789

I know how to use the search button!
I was out of town for 18 days and forgot to turn the computer off- will any damage be done to the hard drive and monitor??

Should be fine. Just a bigger electric bill.

You could take it to someone and have them look at it.

If it is working good I wouldn't do anything.

You might want to change your screen saver & power use setting so it shuts itself down after an hour without use.

It was probably set for hibernation anyway. Aside from that, the only thing you really want to do is disconnect from the internet (physically).

With my old computer that I still have, I once got into the habit of turning off the screen and leaving the computer on all the time. The first couple of times I didn't even notice it, and then once I just kept on doing it over and over again, and then one day I realized I hadn't turned off my computer for almost a month.

I never had any issues with my computer or anything. But it got me thinking about how bad it might be with the fans and everything constantly running all the time with the heat and things.

I was lucky and nothing was ever wrong with my computer, but it's always good to maybe have it looked at just to be on the safe side.

I would think as long as you weren't running any hardware that took a lot of stress constantly running, the ambient temperature of where you computer is located wasn't too warm, and you weren't getting things downloaded online or had some programing process you didn't want to run continue on you will probably be fine. The biggest drawback is the electricity that is wasted. Computers run at hundreds of watts so keeping them fully on when you don't need them is the equivalent of turning and keeping on several of the larger old incandescent light bulbs as far as energy use.

You can't leave those machines idle for too long, otherwise they might begin plotting how to kill you and then integrate it's network with your corpse, making you an AI puppet. In fact, I suggest you gtfo out your house like right now. You shouldn't even be reading this post. I'm serious.

You better not still be reading this post....

Your fucking computer's gonna kill you man why the hell are you still reading this?

Still here? It's not too late.

You're a brave man.

I once left my computer on, idle, for a whole day once without using it & it was logged onto the internet. I came back and found a couple of viruses on it. If youre gonna leave it on make sure you at least disconnect the internet. Some dodgy hackers will find your idle computer & go to work on it while youre off doing something else

Many people leave their pcs on 24/7 for years without problems. They also don't use THAT much electricity in the grand scheme of things, laptops use less though. But your be fine

The only problem I've had leaving my PC on all the time was a power source go out on me. I'd try and turn the PC on; it would power on boot up for a second maybe and power down.

Got a new one and was good to go. Had similar problems though with a HDD a few years ago. Things can wear out obviously but I dont' think just leaving your PC on would affect your HDD like that or put wear on it.

That said I turn it off when I'm not using it...mainly at night time. If I were you I'd at least try and do that; unless you're a ******* person or something.

I was gonna write something about Sky Net and self awareness and blah, blah, blah. But now it'd look unoriginal. You suck, PK.
