It's heartbreaking something like that happened.

Unfortunately, this means the end of Little League. You know some politician will now propose a ban on Little League in order to "protect the children."

Of course they won't. That's crazy, impulsive, overreactive, and politicians would never do anything like that.

....so some of them will probably just want them all to wear suits of armor from now on instead.

Baseball is still considered "America's Sport" by a good many people. Many of which are conservative.

They won't allow the sport to go anywhere or change much. Hell look at all the serious injuries in football and death's from things as preventable as heat stroke?

Nothing changed there and nothing will here.

Yeah, I don't think the overreaction is needed for something like this. A tragic accident, yes, but also a freak accident. There will be no ban, there will be no chest armor, which anyone with an iota of logic knows would interfere too much with the natural swing of the bat.
That said, a pitched baseball is a deceivingly dangerous thing. Cleveland Indian Ray Chapman was killed by one in 1920. Hundreds had their careers shortened by beanings. The only thing more dangerous is a line drive up the middle towards the pitcher.

They shouldn't ban the league but instead get the kids to wear
bullet proof vests.I think kids are wrapped up in too much cotton
wool these days.

He took a baseball to the chest, not a bullet. I don't see how that vest would help.

I think tartanterrier statement like mine about the armor was meant to be sarcastic to show the ridiculousness of it. At least mine was. :dunno:

Or some shit.

Actually my best friend from high school died 2 days after graduation because he got beamed in the chest durring play offs for highschool baseball. It put a small tear in the sack around the heart and it bled through the night effectively strangling his heart. This is not as uncommon as you would think.

True.I've never heard of anyone going out like that in cricket. So it's still a
mystery to me.

I wonder how often in the past sports injuries have resulted in death in children. The politicians' reactions are one thing, but just as important--or troubling--are the potential reactions of worried parents...parents who might not let Johnny play ball because he might get hurt.

Who I also feel sad for is the kid that ended up killing the other one. Even as an adult that would probably bother me a great deal even as an accident. I hate having to image what some kid has to go through living with that.

It actually might be easier to cope with as a kid, since you're young and may not understand the full magnitude of what you just caused (albeit innocently). However, could be a terrible little nest egg that will hatch for him in a few years when he does realize the full scope of what happened and really consume him with guilt.

Now, say you're a little league coach, does this incident suddenly change how you might encourage the kids to trying bunting?

Right. And that first base coach this preseason that lost his eye after getting plucked. Heck, I don't even always feel safe at the stadium, particularly sitting over the dugout. It's only a matter of time some little kid gets plucked and they put up the fences like they did in the nHL after that little girl got killed.
