My brother who served in Iraq told me how American personnel would befriend local dogs around their base and the Iraqi soldiers would look on incredulously. In muslim culture, dogs are considered unclean - vermin no better than rats. It wasn't until Americans in my brother's unit told Iraqi soldiers "if you kick this dog or throw a rock at her again, I will fucking shoot you." that the abuse stopped as far as they knew.

There are exceptions, but for the most part women marry for money or security.

The incident with her near fall happened a few days after she was diagnosed. She probably shouldn't have been there that day but it was a 9/11 tribute. She subsequently skipped a planned trip to California to get some R&R. I'd guess overall she was wrestling with it for about a month, which is not an unusual time frame. Even once it's less acute and you're feeling more functional again you can still have episodes of feeling totally wiped out by it, particularly if you try to do too much.
