At least one person is dead and seven injured after a portion of Madonna's "Sticky and Sweet" stage set collapsed Thursday in Marseilles France, according to French police.

"I am devastated to have just received this tragic news," the singer said in a statement Thursday through her spokesperson Liz Rosenberg. "My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news."

The accident occurred during construction of the stage for Madonna's show at the Velodrome Stadium at 5:15 p.m. local time (11:15 a.m. EST) when the roof accidentally fell in.

Police and fire officials have closed the stadium while trying to rescue those still trapped.

I didn't see this thread, but I posted a response on the matter in the other Madonna thread that I found today. I know that you guys don't like Madonna (hell, does anybody?), but I'm a little bothered by some of the responses in the thread. Maybe I'm being paranoid, maybe it's just that this tragedy hits me way too close for comfort, I don't know. I'm just a little disconcerted by the news.

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Who gets in trouble for this? Madonna? The tour manager? The owner of the venue where the concert was to take place? The persons responsible for building the stage? The persons responsible for making the parts that the stage was built with? Birdy?

OH NOES!!! BIRDY'S GONNA GETS ARRESTEDS!!!

Ultimately, the responsibility falls on the management, as they're supposed to be on top of everything, but, in a lawsuit, everyone from management, the StageCo guys, the local riggers, the local hands, and the building people are responsible and liable. Basically, if you touched the steel, or had something to do with the assembly in any way, shape, or form you're liable.

[nobabe]Here's an update on the tragedy. I honestly don't know if I worked with those guys before. StageCo guys are notorious for going by their road names, so while I know who Ugly, Hairball, El Douche, and Chico are, I wouldn't have the slightest idea who Charles Prow or who Charles Criscenzo are even if I'd worked with them several times.[/nobabe]
