I'd do the same, a lot of times money is lost like this it's forgetful old people and their life savings. I've never been able to see money that's not mine as mine, to me it's just paper. If no one claims it you can get a reward which is acceptable as you earnt it through your honesty. I want to make money the old fashioned way......by winning the lotto

If it's a nominal amount...I'm going to keep it...(translation: Not go through the hassle of trying to figure out who it belongs to.).

If it's a large amount, I'm not going to keep it...(translation: Not go through the hassle of trying to figure out what negative circumstance could arise from me keeping it from who it belongs to.).

If you're inclined to keep it you should at least have you plan worked out ahead of time.

You will need to be aware of any security cams that will capture you in the act. You should be aware of potential booby trapped dye packs that will paint you as the robber. You should be aware of potentially serialized bills that can be traced back to your usage of them...

17K is to much money to nab scott free. Authorities probably would have found out he had it. The person who carelessly left it there would have retraced his steps back to the ATM and then had them review the surveillance footage taken at the ATM. I don't know what the repercussion is for taking money that is just laying on the ground, but I wouldn't have taken my chances. They might lay some bullshit charges on me, although the idiot that just left it there should be the one held accountable.

At times like this it doesn't pay to be honest. Being honest gets you fucked (and not in the fun way) so it does.

Look at the time when a guy found 10k in a bag or suitcase and handed it into the police. They accused him of having drug dealings of some sort. They didn't believe he found the money. So they charged him for what ever it was. Aparently the guy did find it and this is why it got in the papers due to the sheer lunacy of the police and their handling of the case. No idea what happened after that but hopefully common sense prevailed and the police were seen to be what they are and the guy got off with it.

Another time a guy in London found a bag in a playground of all places. It had 7k in it and a revolver fully loaded. He phoned the police right there on the spot. The fat lazy bastards just said to him "there's no one here to come and collect it. could you bring it down to the station." and the station was like a mile and a half away or something like that.

Yeah right. If I found a bag with 17k in it I'd put it into hiding for about 6 to 8 months and then start spending it small amounts at a time from that point on. NEVER would I hand it in. I wouldn't even think of anything but it being MINE ALL MINE HAHAHAHAHA!. You snooze, you lose. You lose it, I keep it.
