Why isn't the media covering this as much as they're covering the crisis in the Ukraine? IMO, these protests should garner more attention because Venezuela is our backyard and they're the 4th largest exporter of oil to the U.S. Thoughts?

Why isn't there more coverage of IRS intimidation; the lack of transparency in the White House in the Benghazi fiasco; voter fraud; the unconstitutional decision to change ACA provisions unilaterally without congressional oversight? Because the leftist media won't portray people who align with their agenda in a bad light.

Create your own thread and you can discuss any one of those issues. Thoughts on the media coverage of Ukraine compared to Venezuela?

No, I made a valid point there. The reason the mainstream media isn't having kittens over Venezuela is that they fucking adored Huge Chaves and they can't bring themselves to believe a socialist would dare ever repress a society.

IRS intimidation - covered, explained, concluded.

Benghazi - talked to death with nothing accomplished. And I watched the hearings. Not the FOX coverage of the hearings, the hearings themselves. Nothing to see here people, move on.

Congress and the ACA? - Wake the fuck up. Seriously.

Back to the actual topic. Venezuela is a situation that is completely out of America's hands. Let's keep something very relevant in mind: this shit has been happening across Latin America since there's been a Latin America. Coups, takeovers, citizen protests, revolutions. This time, it's Venezuela's turn. Obviously there is no military option whatsoever and anything we might attempt (drone strikes) would only blow up in our own faces. Politically, I don't see how anyone, anywhere can do anything about this. Again, it's what they fuckin' do, down there.

It's best just to let them sort this out. In the meantime, I don't think anyone wants to stop selling oil. But I'm the guy that wants cleaner energy and independence and if it takes tough times with Venezuela to achieve it, I'll get over it.

Fox News could do it. Hell, I guess it turns out that they are leftist as well. Damn....and I always thought they were so fair and balanced?? :dunno:

The same could be said of Ukraine but yet it garners most of the media's attention. The only networks that are really coveting it are Fusion TV, BBC News, and Vice News. As J.D Tuccille says in Reason Mag, "certainly, a country in our own hemisphere rates as much impotent attention as one so far away." If we're going to pick a country to focus on, I'd rather it be Venezuela than Ukraine

The Venezuelan government strictly controls the media there including the Internet. CNN was tossed out.

Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
If you mean TV media, Al Jazeera and LinkTV are both doing a good job (IMO) covering the situation in Venezuela. But the mainstream (right wing and left wing) U.S. TV media basically just covers whichever stores are sexy at the moment. And those, they run into the ground, interviewing people who don't know any more about the issue than one of us... just to fill air time.

Including Reuters and the BBC, there are several general media sources that have also done a good job covering the situation. But anymore, you can't expect anything from ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, Fox or CNN that doesn't follow some pre-determined script or biased political point of view. Apart from 60 Minutes and Charlie Rose, I don't think any of those channels are even worth watching anymore for (legitimate, unbiased) news stories or investigative journalism.

I would encourage anyone who can appreciate largely unbiased news, and you can stand to think for yourself (which is becoming increasingly rare in the U.S. these days), to give Al Jazeera America a try. Don't fall for the lies that the enemies of the truth have told about what Al Jazeera America is all about... as I did for awhile. On its worst day, it's exponentially better than CNN and Fox News on their best days.

Will strip for money!
Darn. I was running close to empty on the way home from dinner last night and filled up at a Citgo. Now I feel guilty. At least they donate heating fuel to the poor. Not sure if that cancels things out. However, some businesses certainly do not mind making a profit from them.
