Yes, check out Opeth. They are one of my favorite bands. I especially like both of their concept albums, "My Arms Your Herse" and "Still Life".

well I haven't been into metal so much lately, I fear I'm going soft ,
but the bands that will always be "the ones":

HammerFall,
Nightwish,
Therion,
Blling Guardian,
Manowar,
Sonata Arctica.

All time favourite : Iron Maiden ! I know they ain't that hard'n'heavy, but you just gotta love them.

And a tip : I don't think anyone mentioned a band called "Falconer". I don't think that they are all that well known, but their first album ( I think it's also called "Falconer") Is ab-so-lu-te-ly fantastic.....

If you like goth-metal with a beautiful female soprano mixed with male "growl" vocals you should check out Theatre of Tragedy (the first 2 albums) & The Sins of Thy Beloved.
There´s of course the obvious classic metal bands like Black Sabbath, Slayer & Venom.

I thought this was supposed to be about metal? all I see are shitty hardcore bands. here's tip if you're unsure, if their audience wears girl pants and has bangs longer then the rest of thier hair, then they aren't a metal band.
