CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) — Military officials are charging three California-based Marine corporals with fraud and larceny for entering in a pair of sham marriages to collect housing funding, officials said.

The military alleges that a lesbian couple — one a Marine, the other a civilian — decided to live together off base and wanted to collect the $1,200 housing benefit granted to married Marines.

The female Marine found a male Marine willing to get married, allowing them to collect the housing benefit, and the civilian woman also eventually married a Marine and collected funds, 1st Lt. Maureen Dooley, a spokeswoman at Marine
Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, said Saturday.

The female Marine, Cpl. Ashley Vice, told San Diego's KGTV-TV that she and her partner, Jaime Murphy, were forced to enter sham marriages because the military doesn't provide allowances for unmarried couples and they couldn't afford to live off base without the extra money. She and her partner only wanted to "be a family," Vice said.

"It doesn't matter what their sexual preferences are, if they're violating the law and making fraudulent use of government money, they will be held accountable," Dooley said.

A lot of military marriages are started soley for the money.. Also a lot of women target military men simply because they know that they get more money for being married and the spouse can do as they please while the military member is away overseas or in the field.. Recruiters also push young couples who might not make the marriage leap for another 5+ years to get married before the service guy joins because "it's easier to stay together and better benefits"... That's at least what happened in my marriage. :dunno:

Also I grew up on Camp Pendleton, my step dad was a marine there, I can't understand why they would want to live off base?? Oceanside is super ghetto (not that I don't love it there) but on base housing is a wayyy better option IMO.. :dunno:

Most marriages in the military are started to collect income. Some barracks are horrible. I have been stationed in barracks with asbestos until I got married. You should sit down and count your blessings. Civilian contractors hired by the military are the biggest fraud.

Wrong. I served in the military when you were still trying to figure out which boogers were the ones good enough to eat.

I have no clue what percentage of marriages are shams in the military (not sure how you could know this either...your unit, entire command, each branch of the military???????). I wasn't married then nor was I interested in being married.

The guys who were seemed to be in marriages they wanted to be in...

Of course getting BAQ is an incentive for some people who are already together, fucking, going out to dinner, etc. to get married.

But what the fuck does that have to do with two lesbos marrying other Marines and both collecting the BAQ allowance fraudulently????

If one is technically legally married under the law, then how is a "sham" marriage classified or defined? Is it just a matter of opinion of some official's feelings somewhere about what is ethically alright. Good questions. I don't know either. But it sounds like each of the lesbians was collecting separate housing benefits, while living together in one residence - but neither was living with her "husband".

Another story says the fraud amounts to at least $75K. And the three corporals face a year in the brig, plus getting busted back to privates.

Military recruiters have absolutely not scruples. To them, it's all about numbers and they don't care whether the kid that they're signing up is making the right choice or not. When I finished high school I was seriously considering joining the Navy because I had scored high enough on the ASVAB to get into the nuke program. The problem was that I have flat feet, and at the time I had really bad asthma, which required me to use 3 inhalers at various times throughout the day. When I was doing paperwork at the recruiting office and the topic of my asthma and my flat feet came up the recruiter specifically told me not mention that I had either of those. "They don't have to know." After he had shown me a video of some of the things that happen at basic training I knew that my feet and my lungs would definitely not be able to handle some of those things. I later mentioned what had happened to a friend's dad who had been in the military, and he was absolutely livid and was ready to go and talk to this guy's superior officer. Apparently asthma and flat feet are 2 conditions that automatically disqualify someone from joining the military, and this guy knew that fully well, yet still tried to get me to lie so he could get his numbers.

The Navy's Nuclear Power Program? I was all set to go into that too! My guidance counselor talked me out of it since I've (apparently) had a problem with authority since I was a child. So I guess I'd either be a retired officer right now, drawing a nice pension and full benefits... or I'd be a homeless guy wandering around with a dishonorable discharge and the imprint of an Admiral's face on my fist. Given my history as an adult, the latter is probably more likely than the former. Sounded pretty cool and exciting at the time though.
