mom fled with son after court orders him to get chemo

Have you read the story at the link?

"Authorities believe the mother and son fled Monday after a court-ordered X-ray showed a tumor in Daniel's chest was growing. Doctors have said the tumor will likely kill Daniel without conventional treatment, but Colleen Hauser favors healing methods of an American Indian religious group known as the Nemenhah Band. "
The new warrant gives law enforcement agencies in other states the authority to detain Hauser if the two are found. But authorities said they didn't know what could be done if the Hausers have reached Mexico. Hoffmann said he hopes the pair is still in the U.S.

"I just wish we could get to Colleen and tell her to come in," Hoffmann said. "This is not going to go away. It's a court order."

Hodgkin's lymphoma is a highly curable form of cancer when treated with chemo and radiation. But the teen and his parents rejected chemo after a single treatment, with the boy's mother saying that putting toxic substances in the body violates the family's religious convictions.

Hauser said she had been treating the boy's cancer instead with herbal supplements, vitamins, ionized water and other natural alternatives — a regimen based mostly on information she found on the Internet."

To be honest I hadn't till now.She is one of those religious nuts who I had referenced earlier who is a danger to the health of her son.

I knew someone in his early 20s about 25 yrs ago diagnosed with Hodgings who with the help of chemo and radiation is still alive today. I hope the mother see's the light and gets her son the care he needs soon or someone spots them and he gets the care in spite of his mother.

Yes I did read the story. I still do not think anyone should be forced to do chemo. It should be a choice.

Aw sorry. No answer, yet though.

There was no answer because I would answer you and then you would have added on to your original posting. Just wanted to make sure you were done with the edits. I answered your first question. Your second question is lame. In most cases of suicide the parents did not even know the child was depressed until they had committed suicide. I am sure if they had known they would have sought medical treatment. Then you can debate on and on about the use of SSRI drugs in minors. Which by the way have been proven to increase the thoughts and acts of suicide. Mental issues in a lot of cases can be treated with therapy and not medication. It is just easier to hand out pills to people then it is to actually treat the patient.

Again you are missing the point. The point is about rights. Not cancer or sex in particular. Does a kid have the right to commit suicide? Does a kid have a right to disobey his parents wishes in similar cases, where the parents do want treatment.

Can kids choose what's best for themselves or not?

Does the state have the right to prosecute neglect when the child agrees to the neglect?

I'm playing devil's advocate, here. I don't agree with myself on some points.

I myself am playing devil's advocate. I honestly do not like the idea of the government telling people they must have a medical procedure done. When will they stop? The answer is they will not once they start.

This 13 year old girl in England had cancer and also refused a heart transplant. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,449912,00.html

Is this kid being used as a guinea pig? Why is the state so adamant about him getting this treatment. I am not in favor of parents just letting their children die. It seems these parents are trying something. Didn't Farrah leave the country for a different kind of treatment for her cancer? Our medical establishments seem to be very arrogant about their ways being the only ways. I disagree. While some great advances have been made my American doctors, these are not the only advances made. I believe the drug makers have influenced not only the hospitals but also the law-makers.

The publicity involved with this story seems to be like an episode of "Cops." Just a friendly reminder that no matter what you want to believe about this country, the government can impose its will on you and punish you for going against it.

Because if he has the chemo and radiation he has EXCELLANT chance to get well as Hodgkins is highly treatable. This is not a new treatment of the disease at all and the success rate is very high but without the treatment his prognosis is very poor. His mother is some whack who says god don't want her son treated this way.

To many of you are just ignoring that aspect of it.Should the son pay with his life for his mothers religious views?

Wasn't this country founded on religious freedom and aren't the right-wingers the first to thump the Bible?

Oh sorry, she doesn't believe in the god you do so she is a whack job. My mistake for forgetting Christians know everything.

Children belong to their parents. Not the state.

The government nor the state can't legally tell a parent what they will and can do with their children.

I'm an atheist and consider all of them and belief in them a form of insanity.Like mosyt insane people some are more insane then others.People who let religion interfere with their thoughts on things like science or medicine are an example of being more insane.

I do not think children should be considered property of their parents to do what they see fit with under any and all circumstances.Let me put it this way if he was swimming and got a cramp and he was drowning but she (the mother) said to the lifeguard "don't save him", if god wants him to survive he will, would that be OK? She is denying him what he needs to live and is not doing right by him so she loses her rights IMO.If they are not found and he dies she should go to prison.

Chemo can also cause more harm then good in some cases. Say he gets the chemo and the cancer goes away. Then he has organ failure due to the chemo. Is the doctor legally responsible for the damage? If he does the chemo and still dies is the doctor responsible? You said the mother should be held responsible if he dies. What if he does the chemo and dies? The government should not have the right to force anyone into medical treatment they are opposed to. Children are also the responsibility of their parents. It is up to the parents to use the medical treatments they see fit. Just because you do not agree with their position doesn't make you right and them wrong.

This guy has all the makings of a right-wing speech writer. Except for the whole "don't believe in God" thing.

In the link it says Hodgkins is highly curable with chemo and radiation and as I know from personal experince of knowing someone (now that I think of it it was like 30 ys ago) who went through it and lived very normal life after.Nope no guarantees if he does the the treatment but their is almost a 100% guarantee he will die soon without it.And at least I am telling the truth about the medical outlook for him unlike you who stated earlier "Chemo does not work in many cases." While the doctors say it is "highly curable" or do you think you know better then the doctors like the mother does?

He is MY kid ,let him drown!!!
Would that parent be held liable??

I'm so great I'm jelous of myself.
it's a crazy case, on one hand the family and individual rights to act as they will in their private life, on the other the fact that in all likelihood the child will die without treatment. who's right? sadly, i'd have to side with the government on this one.

D-rock

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
There is another aspect to this that needs to be considered also. If the child is that against getting treatment how are they going to administer it outside of brainwashing him to do it or actually strapping him down or drugging him so he can't move when he gets it? Both those options don't seem very ethical. You would think that with all the machines and other stuff that needs to be medically done to get treatment that you would need a willing participant to make it reasonably happen.

The state will win and we will all forget the case in a few weeks. What was the uproar a few years ago about the woman that wanted to die, or she didn't but her hubby wanted to pull the plug?

Don't you dare touch my kid life guard! CPR is against my religion. There is a chance it could break his ribs or sternum too risky. God will take the water out of his lungs.

How sad that you actually believe that doctors always tell the truth. There have never been any stories to report the opposite. All the medical malpractice suits are all bullshit because doctors can't be wrong.
They have no way of knowing if anyone will respond to the chemo. Highly curable does not mean it will be cured it. It means there is a better chance then not that it will work. I think the mother has the right to choose for her child. It is none of your business what she chooses as a medical option for her son. Only fools would want the government to force anyone to get a medical procedure.

I also have a lot of friends that are doctors. The ones I asked about this case all agree there is never a guarantee that the chemo will even work. He could die either way. They also do not agree with forcing anyone to be treated against their will. Any good doctor will take the patients wishes into account.

To bad some of you want the government to control what we do. Not all of us are dumb enought to want them to run our lives. They already control way to much shit.

FYI In that link you like to refer to it talks about a boy that ran away from home and he didn't die from cancer. He used natural remedies.

"The alert said they might also be with a Massachusetts man named Billy Best, who as a teenager in 1994 ran away from home to escape chemotherapy for cancer similar to Daniel's. Best, who says he was cured by natural remedies, is supporting the family's effort to avoid chemo for Daniel but said this week he hasn't talked to the mother and son since they fled"
