MTV - what's the deal?

I don't consider myself an avid TV viewer; most of my time is spent on the computer, playing instruments, and hanging out with friends. Though when I do find time to watch TV it's usually stations such as Comedy, Family, Food, A&E, and MTV. I find some of the programs on MTV quite entertaining, even if the majority are scripted (Next, Room Raiders, Cribs, etc.). Although I have a friend who completely despises MTV as a whole. I once asked him why, and he just shook his head and said, "They're pathetic conformists". I didn't really understand what he meant because I have no knowledge of MTV's history. I know he's not the only person out there who doesn't like MTV, so could someone please explain to me why MTV receives so much hate?

As far as I've been able to figure out, there's always people out there who will rebel against conformity and hate something just because it's popular and trendy. MTV has a lot of shitty, trashy 'reality' shows that appeal to the lowest demographic and are insanely popular, and I guess that makes it an easy target for those anti-conformity people.

Lets see....they aint played a fuckin MUSIC VIDEO in years and on the off occsaion they actually show an artists' new video its on a goofy fucking show called (cleverly enough) FNMTV hosted by the biggest shithead on 2 feet......Pete Wentz!!! :crash:

MTV, Music Television, supposedly.

They used to have music with a few animated programs like Beavis and Butthead.

They lost their focus.

MTV hasn't been relevant in the Music world since "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out. That was the channel's high point.

Ahh I see; yeah I've noticed that most of MTV's shows appeal mainly to teenagers, since they're the predominant viewers.

Well I never picked up much good songs or bands from watching MTV since I mostly browse guitar forums and stuff for my music. But I'd assume that many Metal fans joined the hate crusade when Rap and Hip Hop became popular and they stopped playing Hard Rock, Metal, et cetera, videos.

I guess I never thought of the fact that it used to be focused on music. MTV only came to Australian cable tv a few years ago so for as long as I've been watching it's been mostly reality shows.

MTV used too play MUSIC VIDEO'S all day long, all night long, I swear @ one point I thought my life was a music video. but seriously, they used to play all the coolest shit out.

Now all they air is all those reality shows that suck ass in a major way. clearly MTV sold out. its embarrassing that they've even kept the name MTV. its deplorable to say the least. :yesyes::dunno::thefinger

MTV is credited with inventing the reality show (in America, anyway). MTV used to have animation shows, game shows (REMOTE CONTROL!) Yo! MTV Raps, Headbanger's Ball, and some actually watchable Spring Break coverage too....

I remember when they played music....ahh, the good old days.

Some time back I did a program check on that channel to see what music videos they had programming for.....none.
It was 5 days of tv programs like Real World, Road rules, My sweet 16 (I think it was the name), etc.
They didn't have a single 30 minute block dedicated to music.
When TRL went off air...they stopped showing music all together.

Whatever works I guess but not really my thing.

They were good when they had programs such as Yo Mtv Raps! but other than that I don't really care bout MTV, I do watch some of their reality shows though and they're entertaining and nice to watch but as far as the music goes they ain't shit....

As others have stated before. I hate MTV because they dont actually show music videos anymore simple as that. They show these pretentious haughty and rather stupid people in their reality shows. but i guess that sells.

Wasn't that the reason they started MTV2, so they could focus on music videos? It went well for awhile, now it's the same stupid shit as regular MTV.
