No large economy has been based off of gold for a long time now so your threat isn't as great as you think it would be. At best you might disrupt some portions of the world's economy while jacking up prices of gold for a while, and remember gold isn't something we need to live so we can go without it if need be. I wouldn't be surprised if gold is more resistant to radiation than most substances, and in any case if a nuclear bomb is detonated inside Fort Knox depending on where it's at the gold has a good chance to be superheated and melt while being vaporized and flung far and wide.

OK, we're gonna fix the the environment, but things won't be democratic; we'll have all the power (benevolent Green Autocracy - best form of government! But sadly also impossible) and we'll use our power to feed the people and provide them healthcare. Rather less admirably we're about to turn the middle east into a giant glass crater and rule by fear. Looks lieke we're fucked for oil then...
