NFLs' Ray Lewis: A lockout means more crime

Putting Ray Lewis' crime prediction to the test
So the Ravens' Ray Lewis says crime will increase in the event of an NFL lockout. "Do the research," he told ESPN. "Watch how much evil, which we call crime, watch how much crime picks up when we take away the game."

Can we quantify this theory? Well, we can sure as heck try.

In a highly unscientific analysis, I took data from the city's Open Baltimore web site that allows us to look at crimes recorded by day, and maybe Lewis is on to something: As it turns out, the Ravens' bye week was the Sunday during the NFL season that saw the highest number of crimes. The following week, when the team resumed play against the Dolphins, was all quiet, relatively speaking.

Week 7 (Oct. 24 vs. Buffalo Bills) - 128 crimes recorded by police

Week 8 (Oct. 31 - Ravens' bye week) - 158 crimes

Ray is certainly eager to play football this season, no question about that! :nanner:

Oh, btw, Ray, what did you and your friends do to kill off a bye weekend in your earlier days... hmmm? :1orglaugh

^They cut people up. That's what they did.

I heard about this on the radio recently. I think I actually agree with him; football gives people something to do on Sunday afternoons in the fall. I pretty much watch football all day on Sundays, and I'd be pretty bored if it wasn't on. I'm not saying I'd go out and commit crimes or anything, but I can see where other people would take to the streets.

I'm going to steal something every Sunday if there is no football. This is a ridiculous theory.

Statistically speaking, crime (violent in nature) seems to increase in NFL cities on game day.

(Especially when the team loses!)

I'm sure Ray is just so smart too, huh? Probably had chearleaders writing all his term papers when he was in college. Athletes should just stick to sports and STFU.

Does anyone do anything on Sundays anyway? I know I don't.

I didn't even think that, but it makes sense. You have tens of thousands of people going to the game (and thousands more out shopping for gameday snacks, watching the game at bars, Hooters etc and to visit friends) in any given city. Where there's people, there's problems and that's just the way it is.

Athletes never stick to sports. They think they're better than us.

And I have nothing to do on Sundays.

Are you ready for a crime spree! :sing:

People are stupid. That is what he is saying.

What!? No football! Let's rob a bank! :1orglaugh

Then again most couch potatoes probably will not be getting off their butts to do anything.

A judge Monday approved a deal allowing Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis to avoid murder charges and jail time by pleading guilty to a misdemeanor and testifying against two co-defendants.

Maybe people should just roll with this line of thinking and put better shows on television in general. That way it will distract people from doing stupid things when they don't have anything else to do. :1orglaugh

Awesome. The guy who stabs people is giving advice on how to prevent increases in crime.

Hr's Ray "The Slasher" Lewis. He doesn't slash people...just crime. He's actually pretty active with community service in Baltimore and elsewhere.

Ray is a great linebacker, but not exactly a scholar... this argument make no sense at all.

And yes, Baltimore is a crime riddled city anyway... who would notice if it got WORSE? :dunno:
