If you have a D-40 and your pics are coming out blurry, it's probably not the shutter speed. You may want to try on manual settings and change the ISO to about 400, Fstop as low as it will go, probably around 4.5 or 5. If it's during the day, your shutter speed should be ok at around 1/400 to 1/600. I don't have a nikon, but I have a Canon and I never use the automatic settings. I took pics of a hockey game once with the above settings and they came out fine. It might be good to play around with those settings at a park taking pictures of people running or playing with their dogs. That sounds lame, but it's all I got!

Default presets? For fucking amateurs. Learn about shutter speed, ISO, when to use flash and .. this is important.. if you want perfect lighting mixed with your shutter speed, USE A TRIPOD.. or take a fuckload of valium. You can choose a quick, easy shutter speed, sure. But the longer that bastard is open the more light you'll take in. But then you have to consider sunlight or those artificial lights they'll use during night games.

Fluoroescent lighting.. outdoor shots.. learn which lights makes greenish or rust colored shots and which makes for shitty shots regardless of what you told the camera to do. The cam is a tool which you must learn to use. Learn them well. ;)

Sorry for my bud english!
try check your lens if its on manual focus...try using the S mode if u're not sure on settings.....try to remember the settings when u use presets mode to shoot so u can at least have a rough idea on how to use the Manual mode...if not u can just learn them online but for me its always about experiment..hope this helps
