It's the world outside your window...now you know where I'm getting that information!

So, you will take information from any source without looking more into the person giving the information?

Sounds like it.

I don't take synthetic medicine.

Maybe you should make an exception...you're starting to get a little delusional.

I have no problem with the CIA's tactics.

None.

Human rights? These animals were taken into custody because they were planning on really fucking up OUR rights as human beings, trying to live a peaceful life. These animals see nothing wrong with using women and children as targets to make their points. These animals believe in death as the ultimate statement of their fanatic beliefs, and I for one am more than happy to assist them in their quest. These animals would gladly assault your mother and sister in front of you while they chopped your fathers' head off.

We are supposed to care about their fucking human rights?

I say go CIA. Big thumbs down to Obama and Co. for stopping these techniques.

By the way.....if you really believe that that is all we did to those fiends, me thinks you are sadly mistaken. I'm sure we have much more.......persuasive.......means of interrogation.

Worst thing we ever did was sign the Geneva pact. Correction. Second worst.

philly you're just so ornery it makes me laugh. as for the CIA officials perhaps they should be charged, however, obama has instituted an amnesty so we'll just get past it. is that the best policy? i'd say it's a mixed bag. on one hand it allows people who acted disgracefully in the name of our country to get a pass. on the other there's nothing that can change the past so prosecuting these individuals would only bring up the incidents and possibly some issues relating to national security. personally i would have preferred the prosecution but i also don't know what obama does.

So single-handedly you have made the determination that, without due process or a presentation of evidence, the people held at Gitmo were/are guilty and should be punished en masse by being killed.

If this country doesn't stand for the protection of human rights, it stands for absolutely nothing. Posts like yours scare the living shit out of me because I know plenty of "Americans" who feel the same way you do.

Ugh....

Obama would have had my blessing. ;)

Well hell then that would have certainly tipped the balance! Maybe you should call him and give him your approval.

I'm a big supporter of Obama but this is extremely disappointing. I know under his watch we are not going to torture but Cheney's cronies need to go to jail.

This is my second disappointment with Obama. Second to Tim Geithners appointment to Sec of State.

Again, Obama has made it clear now and in the past that he doesn't want to march a bunch of subordinates to trial for following orders.

He's right. Can you imagine the message it would send if subordinates followed orders then were subject to prosecution under a new administration?

Due process and fair trials are American ideals and rights that are reserved for Americans. Why should some nut from the Middle East be guaranteed the same rights and freedoms you and I are?

They shouldn't.

In the words of The Talking Goat, "You fuck with me, you get fucked with. That's a promise."

I'm not sorry at all if we have reason to believe someone wishes us and the country harm, and this person won't talk, then fine, have it your way, but now you're gonna get a little wet.

Tough shit.

You want to play the game, you are going to have to abide by our rules, like them or not.

No those ideas of due process and fair trials were fostered by people that in theory at least proposed they be universally applied to all peoples, "all men are created equal" not just "all americans".While of course the founders fell short of that in practice that is what in principal they meant. No matter where the nut comes from the middle east or home grown ones like the Timothy McVeighs they deserve due process and fair trials. What people don't understand is that if you allow any exceptoions to such ideals no one is safe from being unfairly treated.
In a struggle like this where we are saying we are the ones who defending justice and are the more all that to resort to such tactics as torture that undermines that severly are no different then our attackers. And besides torture is extremely poor way to gather good information as almost experts on the subject will tell you.

Isn't "just following orders" the excuse that Nazi officials used at the Nuremburg Trials? It wasn’t a valid excuse then and it isn’t now. There are certain things that are so bad, like committing torture a multitude of times, that it's never a valid reason and should never be done no matter who tells you to do it.

I don't care how politically inconvenient bringing people to trail or revealing the truth would be you always choose to do the right thing. This isn't a minor issue either. On a scale of 0 through 10 of how bad something is torturing people is around 9.8 or 9.9 with 10 being crimes against humanity, (which torture is probably one of anyhow) genocide, or large scale war crimes.

What would happen if we did charge people that did wrong? We would show the world, and maybe more importantly us that NOBODY is above the law or above human rights, that justice will be served, that we aren't hypocrites, that we uphold human rights and are the defenders of it like we claim to be, and that we are willing to truly look at ourselves to see our flaws and fix them instead of pretending they don't exist. Now, what a horrible precedent that would be. The last thing we should be doing is letting them go not to mention the government is going to give them all the support it can in case something is brought against them.

Fair trials and due process aren't just American ideals, they are American ideals the people that created this country thought were human ideals granted by nature and recognized them as such. They were ones that this country actually used to actually believe in.

I also don't buy that prosecuting people would generate too many bad feeling that would hurt this country, and we wouldn't be able to deal with it. We have been through bad times in the past, and have faced challenges greater than this. We are big boys and girls, we would be able to handle it. The truth will us free even if sometimes it does sting.

If this doesn’t prove that Obama is just another scummy politician just like almost all that came before him then nothing will. Real leaders have the courage to do the right thing even when it might be unpleasant or inconvenient.
