To think that Iran WOULDN'T get what it needs from Russia with these sanctions intact is quite naive. Diplomacy is necessary, even if it is entirely masquerade.

Absolutely. Yet we live now in the day and age when few countries are not spying on each other (allies included), and hence the cold war mentality and tactics are obsolete. Those (and there are many of them) who think we are still in a one-on-one match with another super power are missing the fact that what we essentially have today is a massive bar room brawl. That is why the "bring em on" bluster doesn't work in practice -- it's akin to sticking your neck out and letting the whole room take a whack at you.
