Obamania... it's getting on my nerves. He's everywhere you look... it doesn't stop. People seem to truly believe that he is some sort of saviour; and that as the first black president he shows us how far blacks have come.
Why? How many black doctors, teachers, scientists (etc etc) are there in the US? How many homeowners/businessowners? And they are only now allowed to feel proud of their accomplishments because of Obama? That is bullshit, just as it is bullshit to discuss skincolour in the context of job competency.
It's OJ Simpson all over again: some say he's guilty because he's black, others say he's innocent because he's black; but shouldn't they be discussing the evidence instead?

What evidence is there that Obama will be a good president (other than the fact that it is difficult to be worse than Bush)?

Let's hope for the best, but let's also remember please that the only colour known to be liked universally by all politicians is green.

As a White Canadian, I don't think I can ever understand what this means to an African American. However, I can understand how this is a huge event to many African Americans, after having gone through so much. I could especially see it means much to the men and women who were alive in the sixties, when Blacks weren't considered equals. By no means should anoyne ignore the fact that this is one of the biggest, and down-right proudest moments in American history.

But, at the same time, that doesn't mean he will be a great President. His skin colour does not mean he will be the one to return America to its former greatness. That is up to his actions and his character, not his skin colour. I think Obamania stems solely from the fact that he is the first Black man to be President. When looked at in contrast to what America was like even twenty years ago, it is very inspirational how he is now the leader of the free world, and because of that people can't help but look optimisticly into the future.

And, like you said, it will be hard to do worse than Bush.

the rest of "the free world" (however you define that) certainly didn't vote for him, and i really bloody hate the bootlicking attitude a lot of people in other countries have towards the US. i am all for cooperation, but the US president is in no way a superior to or representative of my chancellor (idiotic though she may be) or any other world leader.ou don;t get arrested for ebing named muhammad.

They have already come far. They don't need Obama to justify them or to use him as a barometer for their success.

He's just a man who hasn't been around long enough and no one really knew enough about him to vote for him.

Can't we at least give the guy a year before people start bashing him? By then the first true results of what he has done & hasn't done will become visible & people would at least have a decent reason to bash him.

Besides that, I agree with Namreg. Who even cares about someone's skin color. If the way you are going to lead a country (or do an operation or whatever) is based on the color of your skin, then this Obamamania might be justified, but so would be ...mania(enter the name of the first black doctor/movie star/tv host/singer/plumber/etc on the dots). IMHO it isn't.

I am going not to be so pleasant but I will have to justify my opinion and here are my justifications:
-the 2008 vote was mainly a vote communitarian based vote. And communitarianism isn't reflecting the reality and isn't a factor that should be taken as something serious when it comes to voting
-what Obama has done that was positive for Illinois? Just name a single thing that he has done for reducing criminality in his own state or let alone improving the safety of his state. To what many people know who live in Illinois, Obama has done nothing for improving the safety of his state.
-people with poor political experience shouldn't be authorized in any case to run for President.
-at last but not least, the actions taken by him tell about who he really is. Does America really need a social policy assisting the lazy unwilling to work ghetto crowd and the trash? Actions are judged on the short term especially in difficult situtations and when the result of these actions is more than criticizable and/or of course more than prone to fail, pointing of the finger the popular choice with anger and reason is absolutely and completely justified
-people who were elected thanks to a marketing or a popular image are not really who they pretend to be
-people who make too much promises that are honetsly impossible to fullfill are not really credible
To achieve and finish what I have to say, is that voting by default or/and voting on based communitarian is not really a sign to vote intelligent or useful. Always check who the people who the people you vote really are before giving them your vote, unfortunately not too many voters analyse who really their candidates are.
Of course this my opinion which has been proved during the previous french elections 1995-2002 and during the 1992-1996 American elections.
Please don't jump on me because I expressed my honest feelings and opinions.

I don't know, but he's starting to seem like a real arrogant motherfucker and now that he doesn't need to be nice to get votes, his true colors (no pun intended!) are starting to show. Much like a someone who gets married and no longer has to put on a nice face, Obama seems like he can now finally be himself: some self appointed saviour of the free world who knows what's good for YOU and has no time or the inclination to debate the subject.
