I would never say/believe the Pakistani government knew, but it is very likely that certain individuals within the government did know. The problem here is this, I think if the Pakistani government discovered this to be true, they would most likely cover it up. The CIA needs to investigate this possibility.

Yeah my money is on this. But then the Saudi rulers are no different. I'm sure there are more than a handful in the royal family that fund these religious zelaots as well and we [as in the US] just turn a blind eye to it cos we need they're friggin OIL! But I digress.

There may be some Saudi rulers involved in that, but probably not near as many as Pakistan or other Islamic countries.

It's a sticky situation. If they had no idea he was right there for 6 years that proves they are almost entirely incompetent.

If they knew and were hiding that fact to any degree then they are corrupt and in bed fully with terrorism.

I would think they would be smart enough to move his ass somewhere remote if they were working with him though. Unless they really put all their eggs in the "Hidden in plain sight" basket.

I would assume it wasn't like he was going to the town market everyday. It's possible that he may not have even stepped outside in those 6 years. And, it wouldn't be fair to blame the entire Pakistani government with corruption if 2, 3, 4 or whatever number of officials knew he was there. I do believe they should investigate to see if anyone in the government knew and if so, make them disappear in a way that is lingering and painful.

Yes, that's true. They only control very small pockets and allow the tribal leaders to control everything else. If those tribal leaders ever formed an alliance, they might be able to take over, and then the real scary thing is they would be in control of those nukes until one of them sells out and hands one over to some terrorist.

That's a valid point. But he was so damn close; our intelligence was able to find a leak. Of course I'm assuming it was our intelligence and not the Pakistani government helping only later to say they never knew.

It's not like they are hiding in a crowd of people. There's virtually no one else around and it's small townish in a way. In other words everyone knows everyone elses business.

Pakistan has apprehended more terrorists, suffered more losses and disrupted terrorist plans more often and in greater degree then any other state.

The notion that the state was involved is nonsense. Some rogue elements clearly were, but that is not the same. As John Kerry says, this is a major ally, a hugely strategic and important country and a nuclear power. It is better to work as friends then accuse them.

Also, just to project this forward. IMF stats suggest that by 2025, Pakistan will be a trillion dollar economy in purchasing power terms. They may well be the world's 4th largest nuclear power already and they are a nation of 180m people who produce 5 million sci-tech grads a decade.

That's a lot of potential and a lot of room for a good relationship with Washington.

I myself prefer to believe into the * WHATEVER NUMBER * of officials ....and you may investigate or not ... they got their azzes *saved* by Al Quaida / Taliban ...( in - officially ) . OFFICIALLY they´re guilty , ...but you will NEVER see one of them sweethearts at an American or European court ...NEVER .

That's a little hearsay. Early on in the war when we were looking in the mountains and caves we suspected many people knew his location but didn't support our war effort/invasion force or whatever they considered it to be.

Therefore they kept their mouths shut. Even though there was a 25million dollar bounty put on his head after we couldn't even get a bearing on him.

Assuming the situation is similar they wouldn't have a problem mentioning it in passing that they had OBL or someone very important to their cause right in that building. Which I know is also hearsay; but that's the problem it's to hard to tell wtf was going on. The only ones that can explain it are the Pakistan Gov which doesn't look like it wants to cooperate a whole lot and perhaps Bin Laden's wives.
