Area police chief jailed, dismissed

The police chief of Oakwood -- the first the city has had in more than a decade -- remained in the Leon County Jail on Wednesday afternoon in lieu of $100,000 bail after being arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Officers from the Leon County Sheriff's Office responded to a family violence call about 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Chief Oly Ivy's home in Oakwood.
"The chief wasn't there when we got there," said Leon County Chief Deputy Brent Walters. "Just his wife was there and their newborn."
The couple had been arguing, Walters said, and at some point the dispute had turned physical.
"I think he used his Taser on her several times without the darts," Walters said.
Ivy's wife opted to press charges, and the next day, the Oakwood City Council held a special meeting and unanimously voted to remove him from his position as chief.
Oakwood Mayor Vicki Stroud said she thought finding a new chief would take about six weeks.
"Right now, we don't have anyone acting as chief," she said. "We do have some reserve officers. We will get another policeman here; I'm just sorry that it's all happened."
Stroud said Ivy was doing a good job as police chief and that she had no complaints.
"He was doing so well, too," she said. "I'm sorry for his family, sorry for him and sorry for Oakwood that this has happened."
Ivy was chief for a little less than two months, she said, and had moved to Oakwood for the job.
Oakwood has a population of about 500 and is about 16 miles east of Buffalo on U.S. 79.
