There was a legit news story about 2 years ago that went something like this - Paraphrasing:

"Motorist removes dead deer from roadway and....and ... :eek: is either caught or turned into the authorities; well, to make a long story short, the guy was acquitted of any criminal charges because the "victim" was only a "carcass".
That's a good court case for ya !
