Ask any American: If the Big Three built a product on par with their foreign counterparts, they'd buy it in a second. GM has only itself to blame. Not the unions, not the local governments, not unfair trade practices and import policies...itself.

Didn't you read just a day or two ago how Buick beat Lexus as the most reliable make of car (tied with another brand, forget which) - in the JD Power survey???

Admittedly, though - Buick doesn't offer very fuel-efficient cars, from what I know...

My last car was a Buick, and it was a costly piece of shit.

Similar things with the budget have happened to my school district. They have had their budget slashed for almost every year for a decade now, sometimes my million of dollars and they aren't a big school district to start with. The cuts also get worse every year, and they were practically operating on a bare minimum years ago already. Almost every teacher I knew growing up had been forced into early retirement almost a decade ago. The school has much less money than it did in the late nineties, not even adjusting for inflation. People used to comment on the school I went to how it did a good job even if it was a relatively small, and people received a better education then was expected. Now, it's crap. It's like that everywhere around here. Enrollment numbers are plummeting as the people that care move out and more of the people that are left and can't move (and there is a lot of them) are poorer or just don't own a home to collect taxes on in the first place let alone less people means less state funding. People my age are becoming rarer here. I go out and all I see are a bunch of old people everywhere that are getting by on their retirement. The last time I was at the Secretary of States office to get the license on my car renewed I was the only person out of over a dozen younger than 60. I don't know what places around here will do when they start dying off.

There are a lot of places in Michigan both urban and rural that seem like they are only a step or two or a couple of additional bad circumstances away from turning into a modern day Wild West.

Sometimes I get the feeling other people that hear of how bad it is don't take it seriously or don't really believe it's as bad as people like me say it is. There are parts of Michigan that have never ever started to from the recession before this one. When you add on what looks like it could be a borderline depression for the entire nation it's like nuclear winter.

The schools will close, the cops will be laid off.. a very real possibility months from now. Years from now. Sooner depending on where you live. Chaos sounds like an interesting thing. I believe the national guard is going to be earning their paycheck the hard way in the next year or two. Hell.. they'll probably start going door to door hiring a civvie defense force. Get that government paper, whoohah! Actually I'd join JUST so I could be rearmed by the feds with something semi automatic and reliable. ;)

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Why would they fire every single teacher and then RE-HIRE some of them? All that tells me is that the school board doesn't keep an eye on the teachers that are employed within their jurisdiction, so, in order to actually get to know their teachers, they are making them go through the unnecessary and ridiculous process of re-applying for the jobs that they already had.

Defense budget? Defend WHAT?!? If we eat at ourselves from within, what's to worry about from our foreign neighbors? The only real defense we have is a huge body of water seperating us from them. While perfectly adequate in WW1&2.. today is a different story. We're not a nation of capable, equipped people. We're just.. fucking pathetic and it shows in 90% of the country. Rampant indulgence.. and I dont mean sinful, religious nonsense, I mean.. the greatest nation on the earth and it's run by greedy corporate interests. Military service isnt mandatory. Consumer overspending is typical and consistent. We owe what could be our greatest enemy.. fuckloads of cash.China has a direct route to us. Japan wont stop them. Russia doesnt have the power. The euro union is powerless to help, even if they could. California.. might be the new 'Omaha Beach' in WW3. :(

I have to disagree! Their is a perception of unequal quality that has really hurt the American Auto Industry. I owned 80's Ford's and they were subpar. The 90's were rattle prone but still low maintaince . I did switch to Honda and Acura's soon after. Now I have owned a Saturn and now a Cadillac, they have proven very reilable cars.

Until the Early 00's the foreign brands have had a true edge. In the most common sold cars in the U.S. Camry, Accord the Malibu and Fusion are very competitive. Before that I agree!

The Buick line just surpassed Lexus in over all quality after 3 years. I have many friends that have switch and have been very satisfied.

Dont forget 1 of out 2 cars sold in America are still domestic. I am a true car buff and would love to own a BMW 335i. But American cars have come along way.

Onto the article! those cities are on the ropes due to poor planning for many years by the Big 3, they just did not get that everyone did not want a F150 or a Trailblazer. They also ignored the ever changing market place, that has changed, but communties are now suffering for that past history.

The Buick Lucerne is kicking serious ass, all things considered. This vehicle may be the one that's keeping the Buick name alive. It's not my taste in vehicles, particularly, but hey, it's not bad on the gas consumption. :dunno:

From the termination of teachers in Michigan to Buicks in, umm . . . 3 posts
That's why I like this place so much. :hatsoff:
