R.I.P. Darrell "Shifty" Powers

The inspiration for one of my favorite characters on HBO's "Band of Brothers" Darrell "Shifty" Powers has slipped loose from this mortal coil. His dedication to duty and heroic actions are the stuff of legend.

Thanks to him and the millions of men and women of the greatest generation who fought the Axis powers during WWII the world was a better place. His personal heroics went unrecognized for more than a generation until the publication of Stephen Ambrose's book and the miniseries aired. We are losing thousands of WWII veterans every year and we should all take every opportunity to thank them for their service and sacrifice.

So long Shifty Powers, we hardly knew ye.
