Commercial Rap is retarded. Anyone else see that latest interview with Chuck D? He was blasting the entire music industry.

Unfortunately, that's all you see on TV now. Real artists get pushed into the background and crap like "Laffy Taffy" gets all the airplay. At some point, this generation of hip-hop fans is going to look back on all this shit and laugh at it like people my age do with Vanilla Ice.

everyone is entitled to one's own opinion but I have to disagree. I am not here to diss those resting in peace, but Biggie sounded he was about to run out of breath everytime he flowed in a long verse. Pac could go at in non stop if he wanted to.

So let me get this right.If your slightly over weight you can't rap.So what about some of the originals like Queen Latifah,The Fat Boys,Grandmaster Flash these were all not to slim.But all was great artists and really knew how to put a show on.The Beastie Boys was the most unfitest rappers ever by their own words.But they put on some of the greastest shows ever.

I personally prefer artists who aren't completely "mainstream", with the only exception being Kanye West, and John Legend to a lesser extent (although he's much more R&B). If you have a file-sharing program for music, I suggest you listen to some Immortal Technique. Now that guy is underground.:2 cents:

Public Enemy rewrote the rules of hardcore rap by proving that it could be intelligent, revolutionary and socially aware, N.W.A. capitalized on PE's sonic breakthroughs while ignoring their message and did what they wanted to say and do.

In Chrism86354 defense, Eminem really did have a huge impact on rap in the scheme of things. He paved the way for all other credible white rappers. After Vanilla Ice this was a MAJOR feat. Sure Dr. Dre helped him but theres no denying his talent.

How many other rappers have won the Grammy for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and the Oscar for Best Song in a Motion Picture? None. He's it.:2 cents:

The Beastie Boys aren't really considered rap where I come from. Hip Hop yes, but they are not rappers. (its a fine line I know) Plus they came before Vanilla Ice, not after. They were already established when Vanilla Ice came in and made his mark. Your right that the record companies shaped him, but it still doesn't change the fact that he was a pop solo artist masquerading as a rapper.

There was such a backlash against him in the rap world because of his pop produced raps that the main rap/hip hop industry basically shunned all white up and commer rappers. Its an industry dominated by black artists, influence, culture, producers, etc. The perception that came from it was all white rappers are 'whack'. Dr Dre even hesitated to sign Eminem due to this perception. You have to remember also Gangsta rap dominated for most of the 90's. No White guy is gonna come off all hard and street wise. Eminem changed the rules. He was from a poor area but he rapped about how much his life sucked, how much he hates gays, hates his Mom, whatever. Nobody else was doing that and it worked.

This little line here is not only the worst bit of rap but the problem too.I was never a fan of gangsta rap as it only has a bad outlook on the world.It's all about guns,drugs and crime and is why in my opinion one the reason rap's in such a poor state it's in at the moment.There's been some great rappers in gangsta rap,but all they ever do is whinge,moan or promote crime.You soon bore of them as there rap is always the same old,same old.

Well no argument here. Gangsta rap's only message was misguided anger and "blunts, 40's, and bitches" to qoute a verse. It was aimed at a certain population and not the majority.

The club anthems of today are an improvement, but I can only listen to them when I'm partying or at the club. Its not really chillin' music. I'll go with a little Black Star or even some Kanye West when I want 'music'. ...or another genre altogether.

Winning a Grammy does not make a rap artist great. Most of the time, it's only the mainstream (and non-threatening) artists that get nominated for the awards. Aside from Kanye West, and yes, to some degree Eminem, it's always been people like MC Hammer, Will Smith, Nelly, etc. that don't represent what true hip-hop is.
Until artists like Scarface, KRS-One and some of the other legends who still make incredible music get recognized, the Grammys will always be a farce to me.

The Grammy's have and will always be more about the popular music and artists. I was just using that as one of the examples of Eminem's credibility in rap and the impact he had on the genre. And IMO, Eminem was and is a great lyricist.

Plenty of other hip hop acts have deserved Grammy credit over the years, but their wasn't really a category for them until the mid 90's. Maybe a little bias against the genre in my opinion. A Tribe Called Quest is another example of a group that could have won, but their stuff was overlooked because they were a little early in the game.

I know physique has nothing to do with flow, skill, and beat. But when you flow to your beats and you are out of breath (for whatever reason, being fat, out of shape, etc) it just is not as good compared to someone who has doper beats and can flow on and on.
