Rated XXX

I was sorting some of my dvd´s today and happened to see that on some porn dvd´s it says "Rated XXX" in the copyright and legal disclaimers on the back cover. The thing is that there is no such thing as a "XXX" rating, that´s something made up by and used by the porn industry and have no legal meaning whatsoever (pornmovies aren´t rated at all, if they were submitted for rating i guess they would get a "NC-17" rating in the US). I just found it weird that they would put a made up rating together with the legal notices that actually have some real meaning.

Rated X may simply include among other things, soft core porn so it seems to have become customary for some producers to use XXX to distinguish hard core from soft core.

This is just an honest guess on my part.

Out of my mind. Back in five minutes.
"Rated XXX" is a cheap marketing ploy to arouse interest in the product.

Possibly but there are many movies that originally received X ratings that were later edited to get R ratings including "Robocop", "Total Recall" and "Scareface".

William Rotsler was the first person to suggest XXX was for hard core and he didn't produce porn.

I suspect it can mean different things, country to country. I mean in the UK, for example...hardcore????

I think you mean "Scarface" don't you? I was going to say the same thing but you beat me to it.

I would rather see scareface, sounds interesting!

The porn version could be called "Screwface". :1orglaugh

The whole XXX thing is mainly just a marketing gimmick. The way porn is I'm surprised that they somebody didn't start putting 4 "X"s or even 10 "X"s yet to try and outdo each other.

Yeah I can see "Screwface", but at the end, I really don't think the guy would want to say the line "say hello to my little friend." He would be laughed off the set.

Uh, "my bad"...thanks.:1orglaugh

Point is marketing gimmick or not I can see how XXX has become the de facto rating for hard core porn. I even heard Lexington Steele make reference to triple X as a distinction from just X rated material.

Given what has been suggested for X ratings....I can see how it's has become an industry, self-regulated concept.

I don't watch soft core porn..(not sure how there is still a market for that but whatever) but I have never personally seen a soft core porn movie rated XXX.

Does my bum look big on this forum?
My understanding was that ratings used by the MPAA are G, PG, PG-13 (after Indiana Jones), R, NC-17, and X. "XXX" has come to be synonymous with hardcore sexually explicit material, but is "really" just another X movie.

There´s no "X" rating any longer, it was replaced with "NC-17" in 1990. I think they started using "NC-17" because the porn industry used "XXX" to describe (i´m not gonna call it "rated" because as i said before, porn movies aren´t submitted for rating) the content of hardcore movies and the MPAA wanted a rating that weren´t implying that a movie was porn (a movie could just as well get a "X" rating for voilence as for sex).

If razors now have more than 3 blades, can porn movies have more than 3 'X's ?

Just like a razor with 4 blades, a porn movie with 4 X's would be a cutting edge. Yuk.Yuk. :D
