Ray Harryhausen's classic creatures

I remember all those Sinbad movies and Jason and the Argonauts, especially the fight between Jason and the skeletons.

Other than watching Godzilla & Gamera, I remember seeing a whole lot of monster movies with Harryhausen special effects work. My favorites were the six-armed war goddess Kali of the "Golden Voyage of Sinbad" and the Venusian alien creature Ymir of "20 Million Miles to Earth."

I always love movies like that, and Harryhausen was a genius when it came to special effects.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with all his skeleton scenes.

The new CG shit just doesn't hold a candle to the Harryhausens and the Hensens of the good old days. Practical effects are as good as gone and it's a damn shame that there's generations to come that'll never get to experience it first hand.

Man that sucks. Why can't that exhibit be in New York?!?!?!? Harryhausen rules.

There's a great 2 hour documentary about him that plays on PBS once in awhile. I've seen it as an extra on a few DVD's as well.

He tells a great story about doing the skeleton fight in Jason and the Argonauts. It took him about 3 hours to get one second of film and because it involved making so many different adjustments to so many models, if the phone rang and he left his table, when he got back he couldn't remember where he left off and had to start the shot all over again.

The guy's a genius.

If it wasn't for him there would be no special effect guys like Kevin Yeagher, Stan Winston, and Tom Savini...Ray is and was a pioneer in that field.
