I actually like some of those songs. I guess when you grow up with it, it just seems normal. But the "800 pound Jesus" is a new one to me.
I have to agree with superfly2...
I grew up listening to my parents (especially my old man) play the "old" country music like Kitty Wells, Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Sr., so I guess I'm partially biased when it comes to country music.
Some of these songs are meant to be tongue-in-cheek, album filler, fluff, and the like. Others are novelty songs... recorded just for the sake of fulfilling a contract. And others, much like "All my Ex's Live In Texas" (George Strait - one of today's performer's with the ability to produce at least two or three Top 5 singles off of EVERY album he releases) and "Don't Come Home a-Drinkin' With Lovin' On Your Mind" (Loretta Lynn - the queen matriarch of country music - who, incidentally, has recorded some material with Jack White of The White Stripes) are recognized as being chart-topping singles.
'Course, being from Texas, country music is a way of life here... or so it seems. Being a red-neck, though, doesn't stop me from listening to rock, rap, classical, emo, trance, trip-hop... or any other style of music.
And yes - good lord, yes - some of those titles are enough to make me want to renounce being a red-neck...
Guess my attitude is... whatever floats your boat
