Rest in Peace, Ariel Sharon

I know this isn't going to go over well with certain members here but I truly admired much of what this man accomplished in life. If you have something negative to add, please feel free to start your own thread and don't post it here. I'm looking at you W***E.W*** and a couple others.

Imma light me a candle tomorrow.

For Ariel Sharon and all of Israel as all the wingnuts come out of the woodwork to criticize a great man.

I don’t over criticize those who wish to demonize the man as I did back flips when Nelson Mandella, Huge Chaves, Kim Jong Il, “Chappaquiddick Ted” Kennedy and Chris Dorner snuffed out.

The anti-semites on tumblr are really making it hard to write anything without a huge grin on my face right now. Some doucher wrote with zero irony that Sharon was a “Zionist Nazi.”

For my part I will light a candle for Sharon and Israel before mass tomorrow and hope for more peaceful times.

From my Tumblr page.

As I stated in the OP, please keep your negative comments confined to some other space. But:

As defense minister in 1982 he played a key role in the Lebanon War designed to move the terrorist PLO. Sadly during the action Phalanges—Lebanese Maronite Christian militias committed a massacre in one of the Palestinian Camps. Even after it was proven Sharon neither planned, ordered, nor even knew about the massacre before it happened, he received part of the blame for failing to anticipate the likelihood that the Christian forces may commit atrocities.

When it comes to politics I do not agree with the politics of Israel, and indeed this man. But then again politics in this region was never easy. It is my personal belief that the ticking bomb between Palestines and Israelites only can be defused when they realize they have to work and life together, and let the hate go. It's in that same spirit that I will say RIP. No more, no less.

R.I.P. Sharon, one the greatest military strategists in modern history and a true hero of Israel.

There is one side who has tried to compromise and the other whose stated aim is the elimination of the other. How do you negotiate with that?

Side A: "Ok we'll give up this piece of land and this piece of land and we'll negotiate further for peace."

Side B: "But see, you still exist so, no."

Say what you want to about this guy, he was instrumental in handling a nearly impossible situation for many years.

You wouldn't have done that well. Nor would I. That much is certainly true.

That's a very biased statement suggesting that only one side is good, and the other side is bad. Politics in that region is difficult and both sides make good and bad decisions. When it comes to what you call "compromise" and "giving up pieces of land", may I remind you that Sharon, when he was minister of agriculture in the seventies said, and I quote: "Everybody has to move, run and grab as many (Judean) hilltops as they can to enlarge the (Jewish) settlements because everything we take now will stay ours. ... Everything we don't grab will go to them." That was hardly an idea of "compromise" and "goodness", no? He was the architect of the colonisation politics.
He did indeed order the dismantlement of Jewish colonies and gave those lands back in 2005 as prime minister, and if he hadn't suffered a stroke there's a good chance the region might be far more on it's way to peace, I'll give him that. Point is, there's no such thing as one side being good, and he other's bad, it's much more complicated then that.

Anyway, as per request from the OP, I'll refrain from more politics in this thread... :hatsoff:
