RNC chief: Gay marriage will burden small business

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Republicans can reach a broader base by recasting gay marriage as an issue that could dent pocketbooks as small businesses spend more on health care and other benefits, GOP Chairman Michael Steele said Saturday.

Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing core conservative principles. Steele said he used the argument weeks ago while chatting on a flight with a college student who described herself as fiscally conservative but socially liberal on issues like gay marriage.

"Now all of a sudden I've got someone who wasn't a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. "So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money."

As Steele talked about ways the party could position itself, he also poked fun at his previous pledge to give the GOP a "hip-hop makeover."

"You don't have to wear your pants cut down here or the big bling," he said.

Vermont and Iowa have legalized gay marriage in recent weeks, and a Quinnipiac University poll released in April found that 57 percent of people questioned support civil unions that provide marriage-like rights. Although 55 percent said they opposed gay marriage, the poll indicated a shift toward more acceptance.

The chief of the Republican National Committee has been criticized by some social conservatives in recent weeks after GQ magazine quoted him as saying he opposed gay marriage but wasn't going to "beat people upside the head about it."

Steele, a Catholic and former Maryland lieutenant governor, was elected chairman of the committee earlier this year."

Theres a winning stradegy G.O.P. ,instead of some kind of proposal that might find a way for more people to have health care coverage lets talk about why it should be denied on some basis.:eek:

I will admit as a single heterosexual bachelor a big part of me has hoped that that the end result of this big debate over gay marriage rights would be an outcome of all married people lost any special benefits they get vs single people.

But I would know better then to propose that as an agenda that would win elections.

Steele is nuts if he thinks this new creative reason to be against gay marriage is really going to play well. You got a big percentage of americans concerned about their health care no matter how they stand on gay marriage. All any of them will hear Mr Steele is how you republicans are part of the problem and part of the reason they are worried about health care with your ideas of how to deny it to anyone.

This is so ridiculous. They're just clutching at straws, aren't they? I mean it's total desperation, trying to make their innate homophobia seem like they're 'looking out for the little guy' and understanding people's economic concerns.

If FreeOnes was a woman, I'd marry her!
:1orglaugh

This is classic GOP thinking.....

"Dammit! How can we expand out shrinking voter base.....how....how....?"

::lightbulb goes off in republican's head::

"I know, let's use the current financial crisis to exacerbate homophobia and instigate broader spectrum hatred!"

The Rebumlican Party is truly The Land of the Lost.

Kind of puts a stamp on what is most important to the republican hard-core base.....money trumps human rights every time.

I suggested to some gays where my wife works (all good friends)- one male couple, one female couple- to go to the JOP and legally marry each other (male to female) just for the marriage benefits. I believe they are actually considering it.* It almost seems like a slew of those acts would change something.

*Yes, it would legally be insurance fraud, but VERY difficult to prove.

Another losing point for the GOP....This another purge to the far right with Steele being the puppet..

Guess they ran out of "rational" reasons for people to oppose gay marriage. Oh wait there never was any.

Steele is really a liberal democrat, under the guise of being a republican, putting the last spikes into an already bankrupt and undermined political party Wuuu ! That takes courage ! :1orglaugh

He will be purged very soon, not in boot step with the party line these days.

:glugglug:

They think they need to backwards to go forwards these days. When really the middle is the sweet spot.. Both parties really never learn!

You have to like that train of thought. Instead of getting all people health care where business wouldn't have to worry about tit or giving people liberties that are a human right, lets use the inconveniences to business they might cause as an excuse to deny them because people might look down on us for our real motivations.

Getting rid of slavery was also bad for business, I hope they don't trying to get that back so the businesses won't suffer from it any more.:1orglaugh

If you wish to live wisely, ignore sayings including this one.
Surprise, surprise, they're out of touch with the vast majority of Americans.

considering that only somewhere between 2 and 5 percent of americans are gay i can't see it being that detrimental

So you're identifying that it is somewhat detrimental to small business during a time when all businesses, both large and small are having to make cuts in order to be profitable ? :dunno:

So you agree w/ mr steele or whoever it was that wrote the script ?

Also, small businesses today, now more than ever, because of economic cuts are not offering their employees the voluntary fringe benefit of heath care coverage to begin with, so I don't know what to do with this one.

Knowing the feelings of contempt that many here in this thread have for capitalism, even in it's most minute form, I don't think that we're going to get an objective look at this.

Shouldn't you be studying your ballot booklet? You have an election tomorrow, and you have your state to save! :partysml:

If California goes bankrupt--the first things the creditors come for are guns and bibles--you do know that, right:thefinger
