its interesting because it was the first english settlement in new world.
being one of those 117 must have been reaaly strange, consdering they knew almost nothing of where they were, what existed geographically or what other humans were around.
Actually probably very stressful.
And obviously it was of no great interest to queen elizibeth at the time.

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
The colony gave small pox to the local Indians and then ultimately starved to death because the locals weren't around to give them instruction on how to survive the winter.

the European Christian invaders of Roanoke most likely died out because the indigenous tribe of the area didn't want to give welfare to these illegal alien intruders from Europe knowing they would stab them in the back, torture, terrorize and rape them, enslave, colonize and Christianize them in order to steal their ancestral homelands in the name of Jesus Christ

I think they were killed off by the local indigenous population.
Now mystey/conspiracy buffs would have you believe UFO's or something of that nature made off with them - lol

Oh wow.
Are you spawned from European christian invaders?
I am.
The indians did kill alot of whites also, so its a 2 way street. But if you feel the indians were justified thats cool, but then you must feel that current US citizens would have the right to slaughter for example mexicans who are entering the country by the millions without permission.
Whats the difference?

In Roanoke I think the people fled to the barrier island because of drought and also protection and help from a friendly tribe.
Later they were killed by another indigenous tribe.
I think some did survive and assimilate due to reports over the years in that area that some indiginous had euro features and light eyes.

Even if they were killed by Natives, there would have been some record. Their side, the settlers' side, belongings, etc. It's more like their settlement came apart and dissolved, like a Shyamalan script or something.

I saw some show on the mystery not long ago. They seem to have found a site with some bones and artifacts. Found at least one european skeleton with a bullet in it and that couldn't have been the natives (no guns). They of course have no way of knowing if he was shot by accident or possibly on purpose.

A bullet in a skeleton? Huh? Alert Geraldo....maybe these historical artifacts were the real treasure in Al Capone's vault?

They decided to leave the colony and travel around the world on the Mary Celeste before they were abducted by aliens in the Bermuda Triangle and were forced to serve the evil lord Xenu, along with the members of Flight 19, Frederick Valentich, and the Lost Cosmonauts.

Well, yeah, if you want to put a negative spin on it, but it's nothing they wouldn't have done if they came to Europe first.

excuse me for not being politically correct and not sugar coating the historical facts by not being an American Indian Holocaust Denier and an apologist for European Christian invasion, terrorism, slavery, genocide, torture, grand land theft and European illegal immigration throughout the Americas /sarcasm

There are several things that could have happened to the Roanoke Colony. The Spanish could have destroyed it, they could have moved elsewhere and assimilated into the native cultures(three years is a long time to wait, they probably would have given up hope with April coming and going), or they could have been attacked by hostile tribes. This mystery has always been fascinating to me ever since I heard the story in grade school. I believe that since the word Croatoan was carved into a tree that one of three things happened.

1. They moved to Croatoan island and during the trip their ships sank with all their supplies leaving no trace of the colony.
2. They moved to Croatoan island and assimilated into the local culture helping their new family by bringing any supplies they had. This point is further supported by the fact that when the English came to look for them they did not contact the indigenous population to find out what happened. This could have very well been a possibility
3. They were attacked by the Croatoan tribe. This seems unlikely at their last known location because there would have been some evidence I think.

I lead toward number 2 because of the fact that they were low on food and the colonists not posing a threat would be more likely to receive help from a friendly people. If the expedition that came looking for them would have investigated a little deeper they might have discovered what became of them.

Wow an informed opinion, nice Vader.
Yeah, it seems they were probably nearby for a while but the search partes didnt look deep enough, they probably later were killed or just died off.
Some probably did mix I think.
The spanish killing them is possible.
Just a few years earlier the French who colonized near St Augostine Florida were slaughtered by the spanish.
After that the french gave up.
