Just some highlights of the speech for over 50 years ago.

"Back in 1927 an American socialist, Norman Thomas, six times candidate for president on the Socialist Party ticket, said the American people would never vote for socialism. But he said under the name of liberalism the American people will adopt every fragment of the socialist program.

One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine. It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project. Most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can’t afford it.

Now, the American people, if you put it to them about socialized medicine and gave them a chance to choose, would unhesitatingly vote against it. We had an example of this. Under the Truman administration it was proposed that we have a compulsory health insurance program for all people in the United States, and, of course, the American people unhesitatingly rejected this

What can we do about this? Well, you and I can do a great deal. We can write to our congressmen and our senators. We can say right now that we want no further encroachment on these individual liberties and freedoms. And at the moment, the key issue is, we do not want socialized medicine

The one and only.
I was worried for a moment. Surely the process for resurrecting deceased presidents hasn't been perfected yet. Also, at this point, I'm so tired of hearing about purported socialist agendas and socialized programs that I'm almost ready to embrace them and all other socialist ideals out of spite.

Americans will never support outright Fascism either, except when it's delivered behind the image of the cross.

The reality Jason, is we can not afford to "go at healthcare alone" anymore. All of our peer nations have gov't healthcare. We are the only (formerly) rich nation without it.

All insurance is a scam. All insurance companies take money but do not want to deliver any "benefit." All insurance companies will simply deny a claim and terminate coverage. Homeowner's Insurance, Health Insurance, Auto Insurance, it's all the same scam and we're too stupid to *change* anything.

A gov't health plan would be enormously successful and popular because people will flee the "churn and burn" philosophy that the private insurers operate under.

It is the only way to *reduce costs* AND improve outcomes. Like it or not, we're in a GLOBAL ECONOMY and we pay through the nose while our competitor countries don't.

In short, we are paying for the inefficient system that American Capitalism has evolved into because of Globalization.

There wasn't globalization 50 years ago. There was protectionism.

Pain heals, chicks dig scars, Freeones lasts forever
That speech was from Reagan in 1961,he was voicing opposition to medicare for the elderly.I guarantee you when he ran for president in 1980 he said nothing of the sort as medicare had been in place by then some 15 years and was universally seen as something that was good by then.Republicans opposed it in 1965 and were wrong lol.

I hope republicans would come out against it now ,social security too lol. That way we could really be sure they never win another election.

Isn't he dead? :D

He was half dead when he was president.Old geezer would fall asleep during meetings. We probably should have a max age for president as well as a minimum.

Yeah but that would take all the fun out of having the first 90 year old president. What a world that would be. I'll be hiding under a pile of old coats untill he's dead of voted out. But I'm sure it'll be fun for the rest of you. :D

Military healthcare is true American Socialized Medicine. Yes, we've seen problems but I know of no soldier who would give up access to military healthcare. All of my dad's retired military buddies view it as an ESSENTIAL and live near a base or a clinic.

Medicare is a gov't regulated health plan. It is not socialized medicine because the health care is administrated through private physicians and clinics of whatever sort. Again, nobody in the nation, no *serious* Ron Paul windbag wannabe will actually openly campaign to dismantle Medicare. If they do so, they will get routed at the polls. It's a reality. PEOPLE WANT MEDICARE.

We should solve the problem of funding Medicare + fixing our miserable Health System SIMULTANEOUSLY. The solution: Open Medicare for All Americans.

Damn. The zombie outbreak is starting with Ronald Reagan! Why didn't I see this coming???

Lock and load time.

I agree that there are problems with the health care industry now and with insurance companies. Again, why not concentrate on implementing solutions we know work first before putting a woefully inept Federal government in charge of a large program we cannot afford? Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are all running deficits right now, and the Feds have racked up $1.4 trillion in extra debt this year alone... this is a fiscal disaster waiting to happen and it will make the current recession look like a blip.

This is exactly what I don't understand. If we already have government health care programs that suck then why don't we fix those programs before we get carried away with another program that has major potential to fail? I just don't get why we seem to be in need of another health care program when we already have a few that could be improved vastly with a little effort???

You can't have everything! Where would you put it?!
Nice find. I wouldn't ever go out of my way to listen to Ronald Reagan so hat's off to the online porno world for introducing me to "two girls one cup" and the obscure musings of Ronald Reagan. One is a vomit inducing load of of shit and the other is two girls.......of you can finish the joke yourselves.

I have never understood the desire (perhaps need is a better word) to push Reagan into a space similar to that occupied by Winston Churchill. Even the most cursory review of his life is at odds with the myth of wizened homespun everyman. Ronnie never was in the military, his skills as a husband and parent were dire and he was most at home with the hollywood elite. Non of that is a crime but for fucks sake, enough with the, Oh Shucks me apple pie, high school sweetheart bullshit.

You're right, you don't understand. Government healthcare programs don't suck. What sucks (or is sucking the life out of our economy) is the method of offsetting costs by insurance coverage, private or public.

Reform critics continually cite individuals who simply choose to not be covered as somehow part of their evidence that universal coverage is not necessary.

Well, there are many, many, many people who risk not having auto insurance and other types of insurance. Many people only carry homeowners insurance just because the bank financing it demands their investment be protected.

So it's a no brainer that some people would choose not to pay for health insurance since the costs are fairly high and the perception of their risk for needing it is low.

What happens though is people then also tend to ignore treatments and checkups which could detect and remedy minor conditions...and end up getting treatment for the condition after it's more severe and costlier to treat.

I suppose Reagan was right on the issue of expanding health care but he was wrong in his opposition. If the auto industry had gotten their way back then maybe they would all still be American companies today.

Reagan was wrong. How did social security "supplant" private saving and investment as he warned or alleged???

. Ronnie never was in the military,
After completing fourteen home-study Army Extension Courses, Reagan enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve[26] on April 29, 1937, as a private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa.[27] He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, and on June 18 was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry.[28] His service number was 0 357 403.

Reagan was ordered to active duty for the first time on April 18, 1942. Due to his nearsightedness, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas.[29] His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office.[30] Upon the approval of the Army Air Force (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit (officially, the "18th AAF Base Unit") in Culver City, California.[30] On January 14, 1943 he was promoted to First Lieutenant and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is The Army at Burbank, California.[30] He returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to Captain on July 22, 1943.[27]

In January 1944, Captain Reagan was ordered to temporary duty in New York City to participate in the opening of the sixth War Loan Drive. He was re-assigned to the 18th AAF Base Unit on November 14, 1944, where he remained until the end of World War II.[27] He was recommended for promotion to Major on February 2, 1945, but this recommendation was disapproved on July 17 of that year.[31] He returned to Fort MacArthur, California, where he was separated from active duty on December 9, 1945.[31] By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the AAF.[27

his skills as a husband and parent were dire
Observers described the Reagans' relationship as close, real, and intimate.[43] During his presidency they were reported as frequently displaying their affection for one another; one press secretary said, "They never took each other for granted. They never stopped courting.

He once wrote to her, "whatever I treasure and enjoy... all would be without meaning if I didn’t have you.

have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease... I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience

and he was most at home with the hollywood elite.
Might be becasue he served as the SAG president and numerous friends where actors and actresses that he worked with in the past. No more than Obama being at home with ACORN, he was a community organizer at one point in his life.

All this and more can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Reagan

The ONLY comparason i can come up with between Reagan and Churchill is that Churchill had a hand in stoping the Nazi spread through Europe and Reagan had a hand in stoping communism from spreading through Europe.

Hey Ronnie, does trafficking cocaine into the US count as socialism? Or is that just good old free market capitalism?

Luckily as time went on the American people got a little smarter (at least in this respect) where they don't automatically except something as bad just because of blind ideology and because it "socialistic". Actually seeing that the system we use just doesn't work to help the most people and isn't for the betterment of everybody finally wears on even some of the steadfast of former ideologues.

Isn't Ronny supposed to be "on the outs" with the Wackoes because of that whole deficit spending issue which Ronny kinda started back in the day and which the Wackoes want to be able to criticize Obama over today...:dunno:

shhhhhhh
That's a big dirty non secret conservatives don't want to be confronted with.

And it wasn't just Reagan.
As the Bush administration was busy compiling a huge debt Dick Cheney used Reaganomics as an argument for deficits not mattering.
