Depending on which state you live in, it can be tricky. Even if they aren't on he lease, but they have a reasonable assumption that the domicile is their residence (ie they've been constantly "living," there with their belongings etc...) for more than 2 weeks some states still require a 30 day notice of "eviction," whether or not they're on the lease, such as California does.
Even then there might be some ways around that depending on the laws where he‘s at, although I'm not familiar with California law on this or even Michigan law that much for that matter when it comes to this. Since they don't own the place, it might be possible to legally change the locks on them while they are out(although not in this situation without the owners permission because it's a lease or rental, or at least I assume so because it's an apartment.) You might also be able to institute draconian rules of the residence that they are unwilling to live with but you can considering you're the one that controls the place (especially good to get rid of a person that a heavy smoker for example) and call the authorities if they break them. If you catch them doing anything even technically illegal and record it it might be easier to get the authorities to kick them out. Another thing is that since it's a rental, if you aren't technically allowed to have them living there per signed agreement with the owner, even if you might get into a little trouble for it from the same person, it might be more possible for the landlord or owner of the property to have the authorities come and kick those people out for you considering they never authorized them to be there in the first place and you never had the authority yourself to have them live there yourself.
In any case ever taking rent from somebody you live with and could have a falling out with and might not want in your place later is very foolhardy.
I don’t know if this is legal either, but if you are allowed to charge rent of your own to them now that you have to officially have eviction proceeding with them maybe you could tell them that the rent is now something like $300 dollars a day until they leave, especially if they don't have any official agreement for an amount that they will pay you that they could show anybody, and if they persist you will challenge them in court to get the full amount. Maybe even record a video telling them they now have to pay that much.
